I've used .38Special dies to load .38 LongColt and .45LC to load .45 Schofields, but wonder if an old set of .41Mag dies could be used to load .41Long Colt rounds??

Nope, not even close.  The calibers you mentioned are from the same family, only the lengths are different.  The .41 Colt and .41 mag are not even remotely related.

.41 Colt case is 41 caliber OUTSIDE diameter, .41 Mag is 41 caliber INSIDE. 41Colt uses a bullet about .386 diameter (I think), or else a "Heel Base" bullet with .386 base and about .410 for the forward part. Looks like an overgrown .22 RF.

I figured it out right after I posted. These newfangled smokeless cartridges confuse me sometimes. Looks like I need some .41LC dies...

Thanks

the Harryo thread is very useful book mark it, save to favorites. I also tagged this one http://www.chuckhawks.com/41_LC.htm

I am very certin I have stated this before. The cost for reloading the first box of .41 colts is about as costly has the .41 colt you want them for. ( I estimate I have over 400 buck in the first hundred rounds I made.) How many in a year will you shoot? $80 to TenX might be a small price. Good luck with your project.

CH4D;  $83.01

CH4D dies are excellent, and very reasonably priced.  They are my first choice for classic and uncommon calibers.

CR, since I believe you are already loading for .38Long Colt, you probably already know about Bernie at Old West Moulds, he'll have a proper Heel base or Hollow base mould, and a crimping tool for the heel base ones.

I actually need .386 soft lead bullets since that is what Hoof Hearted recommends for his conversion and I checked with westernbullet.com and they actually stock these, so one problem solved. I didn't want to line the 1851 Navy barrel so I can still shoot loose powder and ball, so getting a Kirst cylinder reamed to .41 colt dimensions will allow bothe.

AHA!  Now I get what you are trying to accomplish.
