Howdy All.

I've been trying to locate a Henry Transition model (Like the one Taylor's used to import) and have combed the web high and low to no avail. Seems the only option is to purchase one overseas and go through the hassel of importing it, that is if you can find a seller overseas willing to go through the hassel with you. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on where one looking for a new home might be. Thanks all for everything in advance.

Though retired, Bill English of the Smith Shop use to make one on your Henry.
You might try that approch... as I said Bill is retired, but he does still keep his hand in  :-\

Thanks for the response, I had read and researched that angle too. I just took it at face value that no more transitions would be coming out of his shop.

I surely can't speak for Bill "Happy Trails"

I will say he's done some light work on Pistols for me, since he announced retirement .

Based on Mike's pictures and diagrams from VTI Gun Parts.
Would the substitution of an 1866 right side plate and an 1866 carrier block work, to make a rifle as in Mike's pictures ?
If you want to close off the magazine and ad a forend, it would take more work

I was checking out Henry rifles on Gun Broker tonight and found a transition model in 45 Colt up for auction.  The seller doesn't call it a transition model but the pictures clearly show that it is.  The auction number is:  310936105.

This answer is a little late but I just saw the question.  Answer: no, the '60 and '66 sideplates are not interchangeable.  '66 is dovetailed in the front edge only, Henry is dovetailed front and rear (which means the Henry sideplate has to be driven upward or downward to be removed, and the '66 folds out sideways from the rear).  It's a good thought, but if they were interchangeable a lot of people would have done so, I'm sure!  And if you do the machine work to add a gate to a Henry, better not mess it up because new sideplates from Uberti are very tough to find!

Not a bad starting price.  It will be interesting to see what it sells for.

As far as I can determine, their were only seven transition Henry's ever built.  No two were alike.  They wound up becoming the "Improved Henry" or the 1866.  If one can't find someone willing to part with a Uberti built Transition, building one is expensive.  The easiest way to do it, takes two rifles.  An 1866 and a Henry.  Take the forearm, barrel and mag tube off the 1866 then sell them.  Remove the forearm lip off the 1866 frame.  Remove the barrel assembly from the Henry, throw the frame away and do the necessary "fitting" to graft the Henry barrel to the 1866 frame.  From 6 feet, it'll look just great.  But ...... Real Expensive.

Well now, if ya wanted to do it that way, wouldn't it cost a lot less to buy just a Henry barrel instead of the whole Henry?

Abilene,

'Cause neither Cimarron nor VTI has had a Henry barrel assembly in forever ???

Welll, I'm not sure who you talked to but I've seen them at Cimarron on the shelf for a number of years.  Not sure if both calibers or just one.  They even have some marked "Cabelas" that were sent from Uberti by mistake 10 years ago.

Coffinmaker

That would make the build some cheaper :o

Now to find one chambered .44 Special.  ;)

The Henry transition that was up for auction on Gunbroker went for $956.99 today.  Not bad for one of the more rarer repro Henrys.
