A friend of mine called today to announce the opening of his new Cowboy Action Shooting range range near Leonard, Texas.  Initially, it is a four stage practice range, but his plans include a full complement of stages with targets.  He has a book of scenarios written that the shooter can use to practice transitions, shooting sequences, and so forth.  You can check him out at

Link said "SASS" rules apply.

Does this mean pistol targets are set at 3 paces and rifles at 5 paces?

I seriously hope this is a good facility and has reasonable target distances.  The range is only about 30 minutes from my house.

. . . And everyone knows I need some practice.

I'm thinking one should contact Terry Weir, the owner, to find out about the targets.  Pancho, this is the guy I told you about that was going have the computer controlled targets that would turn in random order so each shooter would have a different shooting sequence to prevent "gaming the system".  He is not there yet.  He needed to go ahead and open with static targets for now.

A different sequence for each shooter would probably cause some of the speed demons to twist off.  Computerized knockdowns would make it alot more like a real shoot out.

FYI:  I place a call and emailed the contact on the web site last week regarding range set up. (Phone rang and had no option to leave a message.).  No response yet to the email.

I sent him a personal message. He was supposed to be here today, but I guess something came up

Got a response from Terry:

"There are 4 bays with 20 to 24 targets each. You may put them at any distance you wish up to 150 yards.  Right now they are static with the exception that they to swing when hit so there is no return splatter.  Soon we will have knock-downs and movers, just need to get open first."

I also asked about big bore rifles:

"No problem with 45-70 if you put the targets out far enough. They are AR 500 but just 1/4 thick"

Sounds like this will be a winner.
