Help me out folks
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:03:43 PM »
Hey fellers I'm new here and was lookn for some help. I've been doing authentic civilwar reenacting for about 12 years and have also done some historical trekking doing the longhunter and mountain man stuff. That being said I've often thought about single action Shootn and glad to find NCOWS as I'm a stickler for authenticity ( it's just how my head works it might be a curse! ( ; ) I went to my first sass shoot yesterday and met some nice folks and actually got to do a little Shootn a nice fella took some time talking to me and let me shoot his pistols, rifle and shot gun I thought that was pretty cool of him! Any way I'm looking to buy some revolvers and am trying sort through all the info on the net wich can be a chore. I've also checked out the NCOWS approved list. I've talked to usfa and they are a year out to fill a order ) :  talked to a few guys and they seem to love the Rugers I just can't seem to get past them not really being correct. All that being said I'm looking hard at the cimmeron's and Taylor's I know both are made by uberti. Am I on the right track with these two outfits? What would be the most correct model and barrel lengths?
Thankee!

You likely ought to go to a few local matches before you decide. Take some ammo and people will let you try some different guns. I like SAA but you might wind up with an open top. Don't buy 'til you try.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Uberti's are an excellent choice for reproductions.  USFA's are outstanding.  Is there a particular year you are trying to portray?

Johhny: welcome to the world of WAS.
Cimarron and Taylor's are fine outfits and Uberti importers, might also check EMF and Buffalo Arms along with the classifieds both here and on SASSNet.
I started out with Uberti copies of the Colt 1873 single action army and a 1866 Winchester rifle copy in .44WCF all of which got away from me in a home breaking many years ago.
Currently I shoot Uberti copies of the 1860 Colt army with a Richards and Mason conversion and a 1866 Winchester rifle copy both in .44Spl. and black powder.
There will be other members who will post but you can't go wrong with Uberti's no matter the importer.
If you are near Bowling Green, KY. Texas Jack's club puts on a NCOWS shoot most every month, just go to as many matches as you can and try what you can most shooters would be happy to let you try their arms.

Along with the SAA, Open Tops, & Conversions you might want to consider the (Uberti) S&W Schofield and/or Russian top break models. I'm sure someone at one of the shoots would let you fire off a cylinder. Once you get bitten by the S&W bug its hard to go back to the solid frame models!

Welcome Johnny,

If you are shooting for an early 1870's cartridge persona,  I'd go with a 72 Open Top conversion or a Colt Peacemaker replica with a long barrel (7.5).  The shorter barrel Colts didn"t show much till the late 70's and early 80's.   For a rifle, you can't beat a 66 or 73 replica.

If you like the S&W designs,  the No. 3 Schofield was an 1875 design.   The No. 3 Russian saw light as early as 1871.  Uberti makes replicas of both. Smith also made an "American" model as early as 1870.  No current replica exists.  Again, the longer barrels represent the era better   The Smith replicas will cost you a couple hundred more than the Colt replicas.   I started out shooting solide frame Colt replicas.  Capt Jarrett is correct about the S&W Bug. Once it bites, it's hard to shoot a revolver without a hinge on it.

Sticking with Uberti will keep you in good shape on both quality and authenticity.

Hey Thanks for all the help guys, I'm thinking I might start out with some peace makers and go from there. When is the earliest that you start seeing the 5-6 inch barrels? That was the length I was thinking about just for being practical and could pull double duty for runnin around in the woods too.
Thanks
John

5.5" barrels started shipping in 1875.

Also keep in mind that you can shoot NCOWS with a single revolver and a rifle.

Thanks Pancho!
John

No problem, glad to be of help.

If you are free the first week of June, try to attend our National shoot.  Either as a shooter or spectator (spectating is free).  It is our premier shooting event and will give you a great taste of what NCOWS is all about:

There are usually a few vendors there also.
