not happy
« on: February 22, 2012, 06:59:54 PM »
hey guys been hangin and readin awhile. man this is a great place. I jus bought a new Cimarron Uberti transition model .45 colt.and im not very happy with it . fit and finish of the revolver is very good. but it goes down hill from there. got it home and cleaned it up and noticed that the bore was very rough. shot two cylinders through it. took me an hour to get the lead out. so i lapped the bore till it was shiny and smooth. shot another cylinder and what little lead there was jus fell out. and accurate to boot. next cylinder full and the revolver locked up. If I  barley turn the cylinder by hand and pull back on the hammer at the same time then it will cock in battery.so after reading most related posts here im more confident in taking it apart. thanks. so I put one round in a chamber rotated cocked and fired it. it locked up.left the barrel and cylinder in place. removed the back strap and trigger guard.removed the trigger spring.still locked up.removed bolt. still locked up. removed trigger.still locked. rotated cylinder backwards.unlocked.so the hand is all thats left. is it to long or to short. or something else. it only locks up upon firing.I can cock it all day long and it works fine. jus when shooting, .........Ohhhh.one more thing.is there a trick to getting the hand out of the frame?  yep I broke the hand spring on removal.I have 60 and 51 colts and never had a problem getting the hand. darn if I know....Thanks for any help or suggestions....Frontloader

I highly recommend you contact either your dealer of Cimarron directly and send it back to them under warranty repair. I had a problem with a Uberti Cattleman locking up due to cylinder/barrel gap being too tight. Got it back in 5 business days working perfectly since. I also just picked up Cimarron Mod P pre war 7.5" barrel that has worked perfectly with no imperfections I can find. I've put about 200 rounds through it so far as I've only had it a few weeks.

I have not heard of it in awhile but early on some of us were having similar problems and found that the case head was hanging up on the gate transition.  This showed up only with some of the fired brass but did allow the hammer to almost reach a cocked position after being fired, if I remember right?   If your unable to cock the hammer at all immediatly after the gun is fired, then it is a different problem.  Even when I am unable to correct the problem myself, I do like to know and understand why it is happening to my gun so keep asking and describing, someone somewhere will tune in who can tell you what the real problem is.  I have heard of primers backing out and jamming up with the firing pin to lock a gun up??

I am not an expert nor a gunsmith but I did have similar problems with one of my 1872's.

Is the primer on your fired rounds being punctured by the firing pin?

The hammer spring on one open top was so heavy and the firing pin was so pointed that it punctured the primer on each shot and that either prevented the hammer from cocking because it was stuck in the primer or stopped the cylinder from rotating within the next shot or two.

I lightened the hammer spring and replaced the firing pins with aftermarket pins from thesmithshop.com

I don't know if this is the cause of your issue but it does sound very similar to me.

Check to see if the fired round is catching on the loading gate.  Both my Uberti 72 and RM conversions had the gate higher
than the recoil shield so when the fired shell set back against the recoil shield it would catch the sharp edge of the loading
gate.  I took a stone and put a bevel on the loading gate so it would push the case back into the cylinder.  Next time you
shoot it and it will not rotate open the loading gate and see if the cylinder will turn.  If it does that is probably the problem.
Good Luck.  Keep us posted
