Speaking of Guy Fawkes, have any of you seen the movie V for Vendetta?  Excellent movie, but wierd and spooky as all get-out.  I had to watch it twice to get all the plot twists, and would watch it again in a heartbeat.  The main character, a man simply known as V, wears a Guy Fawkes mask throughout the movie, and the Gunpowder Treason & Plot, Part Deaux is a great part of it.

It stars Hugo Weaving (Elrond in The Lord Of The Rings movies, and Agent Smith in The Matrix movies), as well as Natalie Portman(Star Wars' Padme Amidala), who's always extremely easy on the eye.

Angel_Eyes

Hi Sir Chas, just watched a free fireworks show.
The local school field backs onto my rear fence line and they just had a Guy Fawkes party.
Me and the missus sat in my loading room, (has a large picture window), and were treated to a fine free show of wonderful fireworks
We are slightly higher than the majority of the town and overlook the main part, so were able to look out and see all the displays all around the area.
Did my old Scottish heart good, all the show and not a penny spent!!!

(Still got a pile of the old pennies if you need some)

Well.... see, if you take your time, you get a more harmonious outcome.

Well, I'm French- and Irish-Canadian by heritage, so Guy Fawkes Day doesn't mean much to me; neither side of me seems to get too teary-eyed about a bunch of Englishmen being blown to bits heh heh heh  :D  And if it weren't for sharing a first name, I'd probably not think of him at all. But the poetry about it reminds me of

Up the long ladder and down the short rope!
To Hell with King Billy and God bless the Pope!
If that doesn't do
We'll tear him in two
And send him to Hell with his red, white and blue!

Up the Irish!
Yours, &c.,

It still seems odd to this son of NY Irish Catholics that my first Guy Fawkes Bonfire was observed in the yard of a Roman Catholic Church in Rickmansworth, Herts. some years ago.  My Episcopalian wife, (DAR descendent of English Prods) was with me and thought the whole idea of the RC parish celebrating was hilarious.

Had a grand time, to boot.

"The last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions...."  So said my UK neighbor.

Somehow it wasn't as weird as the time I went pub crawling in Dun Loaghaire with a couple of lads from the Garda Siochana and a couple from the RUC.

Wouldn't that be kind of like flushing a cherry bomb down the toilet?
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.

Now that was a right nice little blast.

To all who have seen V for Vendetta, check out the graphic novel or the 10 part comic book.  They are much better.  I was an early fanboy from ~1986 when the comic was released (I was a college chemistry major, comic books were a degree requirement).  Anyway, check those out.

Go Guy!

So;  Here I am at my son's In-Laws in Cyprus.  I find out that the English Ex-Pats celebrate Guy Fawkes Day here too!

They had a slightly different celebration here this summer when 96 containers of ammo seized from Gaza gunrunners went up due to an out of control grass fire.  That might have been no matter, but one of the island's power plants was in the next lot!
