How to beat the heat and still stay PC
« on: July 24, 2011, 02:17:54 PM »
A normal healthy person not on meds that cause trouble in the heat can take pretty extreme temps if they stay hydrated and keep their electolites up.  Modern folks do this with sport drinks, but we all know this ain't period correct. ;)

So I'll offer the PC fix for this.  It's called several names and recipes vary, Switchel, also switzel, swizzle, ginger-water, haymaker's punch or switchy and who knows what else.

8 cups barley water. (Boil 1 pound of barley in the water and eat the barley for breakfast with milk and sugar)
1 1/2 cups molasses
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon of salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger.

Heat water and dissolve all the ing chill, serve cool but not cold.  (Cold drinks will cool your core to much and the body has to work to warm it up.)

Wear loose fitting cotton clothing and keep as much skin covered to avoid exposure to the sun which will heat the body up also.

Del, Thanks, I'll give it a try. We have a shoot this Saturday under NCOWS rules at the Green River gunrange. Suppose to be a little cooler, 90. Thank goodness it is all in the shade. With a little wind we will do ok. We have an NCOWS shoot every fifth Saturday, not an NCOWS posse, just letting the people in Western Kentucky see how NCOWS works. Maybe one day we will be a posse.
I've told you before, but really like the picture of you on the stagecoach. Tj

In the past, at times, I have dropped a handful of lemon drops in my canteen. Lemon drops have been available since the Colonial Period. They give the water a little sugar content to help a bit with energy, and of course a little lemon flavor.

I'll be at the GAF Muster at Pitspiter's place near Sargent Nebraska this weekend and it could be hot in the cook camp, I'm taking my powdered Gatorade and my thermal tabs, that other is too much work to have on hand for 15-20 people, I just offer it as a historical note.  If I get bee stung I'm going to use my Epi-pen also. ;)
