I just received my slip-cover only in a USPS "too bad, so sad, we don't care" envelope. This is the fourth time in two years! I swear that someone in one of the handling facilities is stealing the journal and throwing the slip-cover in this envelope.
Anyone else having this problem?
Howdy, Rusty!
So very sorry for the trouble you've had. Let me say that I USED to be a Mailman - delivering those magazines like you've had issues with. Do the magazines get read by "sorters" and such? Possibly, but since the Shootist and MANY others are mailed in either a poly bag or with a hard, outside paper "protective" cover, it doesn't happen much. To be honest, few of the mail handlers or delivery people have the TIME to look at these things. Due to Money issues, the USPS is on a VERY tight schedule and they are "slavedrivers" when it comes to wasting time. (Yes, we've ALL heard horror stories about "government workers " and the "work ethic" of some of them, but those stories are actually a very small fraction of a percentage point.) Most of us were too worried about losing our JOB in this day and age to mess with folk's mail! Reading a magazine from a customer, believe it or not, falls under the same rules and punishments as
stealing the mail. It doesn't happen very often. Also, realistically, what do you think is going to get looked at more often; the latest
Shootist with pictures fo a bunch of old folks playing "Cowboy" or the latest
Victoria's Secret that comes out every two weeks or so?
The REAL culprit is technology, probably. The sorting of 95% of the mail nowdays is done by
VERY fast moving machines that can sort ten or 12 dozens of magazines per
minute that today's efficiency demands. The letter-sorting is done by machines that sort about 10-15 letters each
second, and while the bigger magazines aren't THAT fast, they are still 10 (or more) times faster than a human.
Forgive me for putting up such a spirited defense, but MOST of us Postal Workers (gruntled) were VERY proud of what we did. I loved the delivery part myself (relaxing on a NICE day - not so much at 33 degrees F and raining or icy) and interacting with my customers, I just hated the leadership and the Congress which (like everything ELSE) seemed to hobble us, while keeping their OWN jobs secure. But that's another story ...
Hope this helps. I'm SURE that the "powers-that-be" can replace your magazine. I'd sure hate to write a 4th piece for the magazine and you NOT be able to read it!

I hope your troubles get fixed, but I'm afraid it'll happen again, sometime.
