Any large sporting goods retailer should have it.  Midway and Cabela's sell it, as well as places like Rotometals.

Ballistic products is a good source, and they have a flat rate shipping deal on up to 50# of shot.  You have to call to get the flat rate deal for some reason, and give them the flat rate code number. They won't offer the deal, you need to specifically ask for it and you need to place the order over the phone, not online to get the flat rate deal. I dunno why they do that, but they do.

Howdy Pards,

I am going to start reloading BP shotgun shells myself.  I picked up a used Mec 600jr and still need to set it up and read the manual yet.

Can anyone point me to a link to a tutorial for making BP shot loads?

Thanks

Willy,
Do some searching on the site.

There is something on the Dark Arts I don't remember if it directly applies but you can look at this old thread as well.

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,21218.0.html

Do you want to shoot fiber wads or plastic wads?  Does it make a difference to you?  There are proponents of both on this forum.  I shoot both, I tend to use plastic because I get a tighter pattern and it is faster to load.  I get all of the smoke and boom a vegetable wad user gets.  Plus I get a bonus during cleaning, I get to show a newbie a slimy snakeskin as I clean.  Usually good for a laugh.

Fiber wads do have advantages if you are still playing around with the right shot weight to powder ratio.  You can adjust up or down and still keep your crimp tight.  Tight crimps are the hallmark of a good shot shell.  And you will earn the admiration of all of your fellow shooters.  They will sing songs about you and your shotshell prowess (that's the Nyquil talking...)

And you have the perfect press to begin your BP loading on.  Easy to use, hard to mess up with, easy to clean up if you do mess up...  It's easy to charge your shells off of the press with a funnel or even through it if you have the mind to.  A very versatile machine.

Thanks pards,

I don't know which wad I'll be using but I prefer the easy cleanup so if I can make it work, I guess the veggie wads would be my choice.

Because of the very high price of lead these days, a lot of shops that used to carry shot no longer do so. Lead is really heavy. You don't want to pay shipping prices for it if you don't have to. See of you can find it locally. Is there a Trap or Skeet club near you? Many Trap and Skeet shooters reload. Run down when they are practicing and ask those guys where they buy their shot.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ditto on what Driftwood Johnson says....

I went to a local gun shop looking for shot last year and found nothing in stock but #8 and #9.

I guess trap shooters like the little shot... the bigger sizes apparently don't sell well, so they don't carry it.

The surprising thing was that they had no real urge to order any #6 for me either.

I was thinking that unless I could meet some significant minimum to make it worth shipping costs, they would not be ordering any more shot until what they had in stock was gone.

Hence my finding out about BPI's 50# flat rate shipping deal.

He's got everything you need to reload shotshells and is a ranked trap shooter.  So his advice is valuable
Tell him South Jersey Duck sent you! ;D
PS:  he also has black powder in inventory.  No Goex CTG though.  I cleaned out his magazine!

Yes, I prefer #8 myself. You need to get a lot of pellets in the pattern to break the bird reliably. In addition, a lot of trap and skeet clubs restrict the sizes of shot allowed to #7 1/2 or smaller. The bigger the shot, the farther it will travel. Where I live it is pretty densely populated, so we don't want any shot leaving the property.

My local trap club did a shot reclamation.  They got 39 55 gallon drums of shot.  The club withheld one, the heaviest one, for club sales.  So, I'm shooting reclaimed shot for SASS.

Recobs Target shot has had some very competitive prices on shot.
