Hello, I am new, and I really am inerested in the basic Cimarron Model P. I know there is an Evil Roy edition that is supposed to be upgraded but I am not quiet ready to afford one of those yet. I do like the model P over the Rugers becuase I like the historical accuracy behind it. My issue is, I haven't seen many reviews on the basic Cimarron Model P. How is the trigger and action? How are the sights?

:) Any info would be appreciated thanks.

The trigger and the action from the factory are a bit stiffer than I like them to be.  Also I really thought that I would like the model Ps because they are small but they were far too small for me even and I'm not a large person.  You should definitely feel one out before buying one.

Camille, are you talking about the Model P Jr. ??  The Model P is the same size as a Colt SAA (well, actually, a few thousandths larger).

Icemaster, the sights on the Model P are same as a 1st gen Colt, meaning tapered blade front and v-notch rear.  They work fine although the gamer folks tend to like square front and wide square rear.  The springs are relatively heavy, again like a Colt.  Triggers are usually pretty good out of the box.  I put spring kits in all my Cimarron handguns.

Howdy Icemaster, the Cimarron Model P is an Uberti Cattleman, also known as the Taylor Cattleman. They are the first guns I bought for SASS, and was very happy with them. I prefer the thin blade front sight and wish I had never sold them. Add a set of Lee Gunslinger springs and they are good to go. If you prefer the square front and wide rear (as most do) then the Evil Roy, Smokewagon, EMF GW II, and USFA Rodeo all have them. The USFA Rodeo are a cut above the rest. Good Luck

Shop around. Don't just settle for a Cimmaron, be open to a Uberti even though they are the same. I scored a stainless Model P in .45LC that had never been fired for $320 on   www.auctionarms.com    I see the same gun going for  between $500-$600 at different places like Texas Jacks.
All you need is love and a .45

Regarding the Uberti Cattleman - it is almost the same as the Cimarron Model P but not quite.  The Cattleman has safety parts parts built into the hammer.  These show up as a slot in the rear of the hammer, a screw on the top, and when cocked you see a small metal wedge and slot in the hammer below the firing pin.  The Model P has a standard Colt style hammer.  I mention this because you stated you were interested in historical accuracy.  And since Dances with Coyotes mentioned Texas Jacks (nice buy on that stainless gun, BTW), I will mention what I do occasionally to people who bring shopping at Texas Jacks.  TJ generally prices their guns at MSRP (except when something is on sale).  They do this so that they don't undercut Cimarron's dealers (the Cimarron owner also owns TJ).  So you will usually get a better price by having a dealer order directly from Cimarron.  Of course, TJ keeps a pretty good inventory on hand and occasionally they have something that is out of stock at Cimarron.  Just FYI.

Must be but I sure don't remember the Jr part.  Of course it's been right at 8 years since I was in the gun store handling it so it's no wonder I don't remember it.  :o  So maybe it won't be that small but I still recommend handling a gun before you buy one.   :D

I have a Cimarron Model P in 45 Colt. The trigger is okay, the sights are like an original Colt, which is to say, they are crap. As far as a gun that goes bang, it's fine.

If you want to be competitive, get a Ruger.

IMO they're mighty fine pistols, but I'm a greenie soo......
I've got some Evil Roy P's, 4 3/4 in .357. If you get them from Gene (ER) hisself you'd be surprised at the price. He cuts some good deals (he lists the P's at $570ea). http://www.evilroyshootingschool.com/
I know the Cimarrons get bagged on frequently and I cant speak for any of their products other than the ER's, and I can't speak for their customer service because I haven't had a problem and I deal direct with Gene anyway. That said my ER's perform great, I'm not sure which gunsmith Gene has do the work but they are perfectly timed/tuned right out of the box. Trigger pull is great. I shoot 200-300 rds per week and again zero problems. The checkered "special gunfighter" grips are the bestest I've felt, I don't even need to change them. The ER just feels right to me.The grips are thin, so maybe if you have a gorilla hand they won't work for ya'. But I like 'em.

I have a Cimarron model P in shiny stainless that was smooth right out of the box.

Sometime back, prior to the Evil Roy guns, I thought Cimarron advertised the Model P as having action work included in the basic model.

Truthfully,  I think I just got lucky with my Model P from Cimarron.

Thats funny as I have never finished behind a ruger,  if you want to be competitive practice.  Model P is fine, I have 2 and I haven't needed to cheat the action to be competitive, so put that in your ruger and shoot it.

If you want history and also the best SAA made today then buy USFA's. The top premium model is one nice revolver with the case hardening done by Turnbull. If you want the same gun but not the pretty finish then purchase a set of Rodeo's. The guns are the same except for finish. The top models are close to $950 each and the Rodeo is about $700 each. You will pay very close to that for the Uberti Smoke Wagons. If you purchase them from Long Hunter (Jim Finch) you will have a pair of revolvers that have all the work done on them already for just the retail price. Buy them elsewhere and you pay extra. He is by far the best to deal with not only for price but for one of the nicest guys in the sport. You may do as I did and use 0000 steel wool on the outside of the Rodeo which removes just enough of that matte finish to give the gun a antique look. Several matches will do the rest.
