Roosevelt at Elkhorn Ranch
« on: January 22, 2010, 09:05:01 PM »

Wilmot Dow, Roosevelt, and Bill Sewall at Elkhorn Ranch. Roosevelt induced two former Maine guides, Wilmot Dow and William Sewall, to become foremen of the new ranch.

The ranch house veranda. The Elkhorn buildings, begun in the autumn and winter of 1884-85, were completed in the early summer of 1885. The Elkhorn Ranch house was one of the finest in the Badlands. Roosevelt described it as the "Home Ranch House." Henceforth he spent most of his time in the Badlands there instead of at Maltese Cross.

The seal skin chaps he is wearing are on display in the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace Historic Site in New York City.  The original house was torn down in 1916 but it was rebuilt as a museum in 1919 (the year he died).  It is a very interesting place and has quite a few of his things, including the jacket and speech with a bullet hole through it from the 1912 assassination attempt, one of his rough rider uniforms (including the blue silk scarf with white polka dots), and his desk from when he was undersecretary of the Navy (it has monitors on the sides, very cool).  Its quite small and intimate, like being in his house and not that many people know its there.
