Range Box - Part Duex
« on: January 23, 2009, 02:50:13 PM »
Savvy Jack done throwed a cravin' on me.  That Range Box idea got me diggin in the scrap wood bin and 20 year hardwear drawer.  Found some raw matierials, and after tortureing them on the work bench for a couple of days here is what I came up with.

That's a great looking box!  Awesome idea with the hinged loading lever!  That's awesome.  How much does it weigh?  I really like that design.

Thank you for the kind words.  Thank ya kindly. :)

It's a little less than 5 pounds loaded up.  I still want to figure out a handle, but not sure which way to go with it.  The best part is, it is just scrap I had around the work shop.  Still waiting for my bail out check to show up. ;D

I'm pretty excited, I have some quarter-sawn cherry back home that's coming up with my bronco.  I'm pretty sure I will be able to build it with the scraps of that.  Any chance that you can give out the dimensions on the box so I know it'll fit the loader?

Outside measure 6" wide x 12" long x 6.5" high.  I just built the box to hold the loader and provide a stable platform while loading.  I look forward to seeing what other designs are thought of.  I only steal the very best ideas.  ;)  Kiss is my creed in design. ;D

I can tell KISS is your creed, that's why I like it.  I may make mine more in an arts & crafts style with exposed joints, but that's because I enjoy doing that and with quarter-sawn cherry, why not!?! LOL
how thick is the wood?  4/4 before milling?  that's what I've got.

I used hickory slats from pallets I unpacked at work.  They came in various widths, 6 1/4" being the widest.  They were all about 5/8" thick.  Some of the boards were pretty warped so I hand planed them then sanded.  They finished out @ 1/2" thick.  With a good hard wood, it is stout enough to stand up to what I'll put it through.  I try to stay away from pine when I make things like this.  Tends to be too bulky.

Look forward to seeing your results.

thanks MuleePete.  I should be able to get started on mine soon, right now just working on the plans based off of your dimensions for mine.  When my truck gets up here I'll be able to get started with the wood!

I know it's been a while but I got my truck up here finally.  The cherry wood is inside it too, so I'll be starting this project pretty quick!

Great Range box pard . . . . I really like the way the loader folds out of the end  :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.
