Barbarosa,

Here are photos of a new army and a new navy conversion. The Army was a rimfire that was converted again to centre fire.
The navy is .38 rimfire missing the extractor.

Hoof Hearted,...I notice you have a Ken Howell Rem conversion,..your "Navy-esque" Army. Very nice.
In Dennis Adler's "Metallic Cartridge Conversions", he says that Ken Howell did alot more Colt conversions
(more than 300) compared to Remington conversions (about a dozen).
That would make your Howell conversion kinda rare among the Howell conversions.

I also was lucky to pic up a Howell Rem conversion awhile back. It's nickel plated and chambered in .44-40
I love it, made some new grips for it, and really enjoy shooting it. I was going to de-plate it, but it's just so easy to clean up, and the nickel plating keeps things pretty rust free,...I just deplated the brass trigger guard and left the rest in nickel. I do wish there were a way to dull the finish down a bit, though.

The style of your Howell conversion is the same as mine

I would guess that he might have nickled it if he was having blueing problems (if you look at mine in the pic above you'll see the frame is kinda orange).

The Navy style conversion looks great (even though Remington never did it in a NMA).

How is yours marked?

Hoof Heart....yes, I see what you mean about the color of your frame. Is your front site dovetailed?

The frame on mine has been defarbed , and he put " R&D Beloit Wis USA" on top of the barrel, and
"black powder only" on the lower/left face of the barrel., and serial number 064 on frame near front trigger guard screw and beneath barrel under loading lever.

I contacted R&D to try & find out what manufacturer the frame was, etc. , but they hadn't kept any info except that he made it in 1995 and sold to JLM Shooter Supply in Iowa. Mine has a dovetailed front site, so I would assume it is an Uberti frame. It had never been shot before, in fact, I had to carefully hand scrape the rim recesses to get the cartridges to seat down enough to clear the breechface while cocking. I think the nickel plating added just enough layer to tighten the tolerances too much. It's amazing he'd let it out of his shop like that,...unless, of course someone nickled it later.

Due to it being '58 Rem in .44-40 , he made it a 5 shot cyl........

That's some interesting info about the numbers made by Kenny. My story about the Howell revolver goes like this:

I sent him an 1860 to do a conversion on (many years ago) and it never got done. This was before his heart attack and busy business venture with the R&D cylinders. I was pretty pissed (never got the gun back either)! But I still always wanted one

I eventually bought this one from a guy on the SASS wire and I also bought an 1860 conversion there also (back in the early days). I never got good pics or descriptions from either seller (buyer beware

) but I like to fiddle and I have been a SA smith for 20 years or so.

The NMA "navy" conversion I have does not even start to compare with my Armisport (Robert Millington) conversion. On the one hand the Howell gun is overbuffed, funny colored, the "stamping" is horrid, the grips are miss-shapen, eycetras........The Millington gun is so "perfect" as to be too good!

My R&D is marked just like yours. I'll try to get some good pics and post them soon!

Yes indeed, I've never personally seen or handled a Millington conversion , but from reading about them and looking at pictures of them in Adler's book, it's certainly obvious that he takes great pride in his work and is a true artisan.

Sure, I'd like to see some good pictures of your R&D.,.....and the Millington too, ifin ya get a chance.

Millington is the only game in town as far as making a true '58 "thin plate" conversion. Too bad he's backed up worse than a frat house toilet on Sunday morning.

FWIW, in the Remington book by Marcot there are photos of '58's in near mint condition and the rust blue on the barrels is a different hue than the frames as I'm sure they are different metals.
