Here's Romano's site, they still make the prettiest Spencers!  Let's talk them into bayonets and slings!

Why on earth would anyone spend $5100 on a repro when I can get an original for $2000 or under?  ::)

Hi Fox Creek Kid,

;D ;D ;D "To each his own." A lot of shooters have purchased Romano's Spencers and stand by them as shooters and for their quality appearance.  ;D ;D  "We must all stand together no matter what our differences or preferences in the Spencers we carry or want to own".  ::) ::) ::)

:-* :-* :-*  I'm just trying to fend off any "heated responses" that may follow.  ::) ::)

For the same reason ...one might opt for a Chip Foose built all new 1969 Camaro, Mustang Etc. over an Original
On the other hand one of those Completely original Pony cars in Mint condition will bring way more than a Foose copy.

Romamo builds a fine piece...it's pricey, but other than the Armi Sport (which at the end of the day of shooting is a bargain) he IS the only source for new Spencer....

when planets align...do the deal !

I've got a Romano, not a bad piece, but I'm not sure I'd drop $5100 on one. To be fair I'm fairly certain the one I have must be one of the earliest ones he made judging by the SN and some of the stamping. It shoots consistent and accurate. Fit and finish is pretty good overall, especially in the area of metal to wood.

Two Flints,
Fortunately, this is not like the other well known CAS website.  I am sure things will remain civil here.  FCK is stating his opinion just like others do.  Personally,  I am glad that Romano is still in business making fine Spencers.  I am also very happy that Armi Sport makes good quality Spencers for a very good price.   I love my Armi Sport and probably would not buy a 5k Spencer.  The fact that others buy them is great.  I have seen the same debate regarding the new USFA 75 Remington coming out in comparison to the Uberti (EMF) version.   I will be buying the USFA model but also have the Uberti model.  It is simply a matter of personal choice.  This hobby/sport is different for each of us.  We all spend our money on what we feel is good for ourselves.  More power to all of us.   Thanks for overseeing a fine forum Two Flints.  Regards.  Deadeye.

Deadeye,

I wasn't at all concerned with Fox Creek Kid's opinion on Romano Spencers, but rather how
others  would react and maybe respond to it ::) ::)  I was just trying to head off any such postings ;D ;D  I'm sure you know that 'combative negative postings' don't really accomplish anything, other than to inflame and insult someone's personal feelings :-\ :-\

By the way, if I didn't already own several flintlock rifles from my Mountain Man persona days, I might seriously consider the single shot Spencer that Romano shows on his web site ::)  But, the price for that model is way beyond what I could afford :P

If I ever buy another carbine to add to my collection of firearms, it would have to be an Evans :o :o

At one of the NCOWS posses I run with here in Indiana I have been shooting my Armi Sport Spencer for the "woods walk" portion of the shoot.  It works really well and thumps those targets like nobodys business.  its been a long winter and I sure do need to do some shooting soon!!

I shoot 3 different Romano firearms, and they are ALL top shelf. Same argument as to why people buy Colt and USFA instead of a 300.00 Single action. Do we really need to run through the list of what is wrong with the Italian copies?

I received the following Email regarding the Romano thread.  You see how it leads to negative comments ???  In this case the negative comment was directed at me.  This is the Email I received:

I find it interesting that you openly "have No problem" with Fox
creek doing nothing but being inflammatory by bashing anyone who
would spend a high amount of money on a Romano, but you wont stand
for anyone taking issue with the Italian imports. Fox creeks comment
has no merits other than to put down anyone willing to spend what
Larry asks for his guns, and it is nothing but insulting.

and yet another Email from the same person:

The more I read this the more mad I become. Someone posts a a link
and a positive comment about Romano Spencers, FCK responds with
"....why would anyone buy this..." And you, the moderator, responds
with " I have no problem at all with what FCK said".

How does this make the person who originally felt like sharing this
link and expressing he thought these were nice.

YOu say you don't want al;l the negative posts, but what do you think
FCK's response was!!?!?!?!?!

Hi Sender of the Emails,

When I first became interested in Spencers I shopped around to buy one.  I first went to the Romano web site and really was itching to buy one of his Spencers, but the price was too high for me  :'(   FCK indicated the same thought in his post.  You call this "bashing"  ???  What I thought several years ago, regarding the price of a Romano Spencer, and what FCK posted in this thread is actually an expression of the same thought "Romano Spencers are too expensive".  So, in this case, I don't have any problem with someone expressing a true statement, i.e., Romano Spencers are too expensive.  I'm sure many shooters lust for a Romano Spencer, but simply can't afford one. It's just economics :-\ :-\  Romano Spencers are great shooters, so I have read, and they are beautifully made, but expensive.  Is this really bashing ??? ???

I own two original Spencers.  They are both shooters.  I paid less for my 2 original Spencers than I would have for one brand new (and it is a reproduction) Romano Spencer.  I own three Armi Sport reproduction Spencers.  The cost of all three Armi Sport Spencers was less than the cost of one brand new (and it is a reproduction) Romano Spencer.

Mr. Emailer, please check out the Spencer Shooting Society.  I think you'll find that quite a few members and no-members of SSS have posted their issues with the Armi Sport Spencer.  I even dedicated a thread ORI (Often Requested Information) to all the Spencer owners, who have had issues with both reproduction and original Spencers.

Mr. Emailer, if you would be willing to send me $4,500.00, I will buy that Romano Single Shot Spencer I have been lusting for for several years now.  On my own, I can't afford it, it's too expensive.  Oooops, is this another example of bashing ::) ::) or is it just economics ??? ???

I never said one word about the Romano Spencer being an inferior product. They are beautiful. I only question someone paying $5,100.00 for one when you can buy originals all day long for circa. $2,000.00. If that's "inflammatory" by offering sound fiscal advice then.................... ::) The Romano will always remain a repro, hence its value will only depreciate IMO. The Italian Spencer has its "bugs" but they are easily rectified IMO and they are built better than most originals I have handled as well as being of better metal. I would venture to say that easily 95% of the people posting here have Armisport Spencers.

   Greetings!

After "The Flu", and several other obstacles, I'm back on line!!!
I sold a few handguns for the cash to get my Romano Spencer 1860
Carbine; it's beautiful, and it shoots! I spent a lot less for an Armi-Sport
Spencer 1865 "Infantry Rifle" that looks good, and also shoots. I LOVE
them both, but probably won't be shooting the Romano much anymore;
and NO!, it will NOT be going down in value!
If you want a genuine work of art {Romano} to admire or shoot, cool!
Save your cash, do whatever! If you want a shooter, and don't want to
risk scratching or banging up a Romano, get an Armi-Sport!
What you all should be wondering who's going to bring out a Gemmer
Spencer!?!

   Be Well, All!

Howdy,I'm new to this forum.I've been reading it for about a year because the Spencer is my favorite gun since childhood.I have a Romano Spencer carbine,an original 1860 Spencer and one of the Italiian carbines in 56-50.I also have a Romano Spencer Rifle comming  soon.I inherited some money a while ago and wanted an American made Spencer carbine, rifle, and a Shiloh Sharps 1874 Infantry rifle (45-70).I have'nt had time to shoot the Romano, but it's a beautiful gun with the color case done by Turnbull.I talked to Larry Romano on the phone and he told me he was tired of making the Spencers...so I ordered two before he did stopped making them.I ran into him at the Baltimore Antique Gun Show and he had all his wares on display. He had a Confederate Tarpley that will sell for about $13,000 if anyone is interested.I just have a thing about American quality (the little bit we have left)!

If I had a Spencer made by Romano it would be in a scabbard on my horse. I'd hunt and shoot it till I wore it out. Then when it came out of the scabbard it would stll be a fine Romano Spencer.

These are some photos of my Romano Spencer carbine.Turnbull did the color case hardening, not Larry Romano on this one.The Romano Spencer has a taller target front sight than the other Spencers.

I still think all y'all are funny.

Let me count my blessings... I'm thoroughly glad that:

  • There are still originals out there that can still be shot (Maybe there will be a special place in heaven for S&S Firearms and the CF converters...) I'll be shooting mine for a long time yet (I hope).
  • Larry Romano has been, and still is making beautiful Spencers (even Darned expensive ones), and hope he can stay in business. But of course, if he's tired of making them... He could always go make a few Evans'!
  • Armi Sport is making Spencers, and in funny calibers.  The more, the merrier. 'Course I really do wish they'd have made their brass with just another few thousandths on the rim...  Of course, if Armi wants to get another rifle to compete with all of those Winchester/Henry repros... They could always go make a few Evans'!

I can't say I've met a Spencer I didn't like... At least one that worked.

I guess I'm with you, Two Flints - If I ever get the money for another rifle, it will probably be an Evans. .44 Evans Short.

Thanks for the fine photos!
