In Feb-2006 I ordered one of the then new 1876 in 45-60 from Cimarron Arms. Thirteen months later I received it. From March to October 2007 I worked with the rifle, trying to achieve consistent accuracy. This, with safe smokeless loads. Even after adding the Marbles Improved sight, that goal was not obtained. Bullets were both cast 300 gr.(.458"-.459"dia.) and Remington 300 gr jacketed bullets. Might get one good group, then move over the paper. This was with the original and Marbles sights.
On Oct. 2nd-2007 I sent the rifle to Cimarron's gunsmith in New york state. This was per their instructions. During this time ,Oct-07 to early Jan-2008 , I had several converstions with the gunsmith. All he could find was that, when slugging the bore, it did not "seem right". Tight-then loose. In late Dec-07 the rifle was sent back to Cimarron for Mike Harvey (owner) to make a personal evaluation. Harvey shot maybe 5- shots of Buffalo Arms BP rounds thru it. Said I was using the wrong diameter bullet. Indicated that I should be using .456" not .458-.459"diameter bullets. Then he sent it to a local gunsmith to work the crown.
When I received the rifle I was astounded. The crown-work consisted of the muzzle being ground off, not faced on a lathe, leaving the face of the barrel .014"-.015" off square. There was no crown left. The bore was "frosted" from the BP residue left for couple of months, because they did not clean it. The owner of the gunshop where I had purchased the Cimarron, immediately ordered me a new Uberti direct from Stoeger.
Right from the box the Uberti shot 50-60 percent better than the Cimarron, and grouped consistently. Also a gunsmith who had examined both rifles said the Uberti was better finished inside and out than the Cimarron. Bottom line, neither I or the gunshop will purchase anything from Cimarron. Harvey treated both the shop and myself badly. When you purchase a Cimarron, you are paying more money for a lesser qualilty rifle, and will not get fair or professional service.
