G'day, I have never shot BP before (apart from the odd dabble) but intend to start shooting classic cowboy with BP in gunfighter mode. I have also been sniffing around the cap and ball guys, but never saw a gun/s that really captured my imagination...... Until now!

This is not my set, but the set I bought is exactly the same. Brand new, the cylinders have never been turned (I'll soon fix that  ;D).

I don't know what I am going to use these for, maybe as my match guns if I can operate them quickly enough, should be a hoot.

I sort of remember a run of 'genuine' Colt cap and ball pistols being made in the 70s and from memory they picked up the serial numbers where the factory left off many years ago, these have no markings that indicate Uberti or Italy, just Colt and Hartford.

I picked these up for $AU1800, the set pictured is for sale for $AU2950. I think mine was a tad cheap and the other set miles too dear.

Has anyone had anything to do with these pistols. The quality and finish is excellent, I can't wait!!!!!!!

I have the same set unturned. I just look at them. I have other 2nd Generation's that are not quite so collectable that I shoot. The set will go with my estate to one of my interested heirs, I hope. They sure are purty.

I think I will shoot mine :o they are the best fitting/balanced C&B pistols I have ever handled. The finish and fitting are just too good to make them safe queens. I think they will be probably have more sentimental valuable to my heirs as 'these are old Mick's pistol's' 'Boy! he let me shoot them once, heaps of smoke and flame that was a great day!' I hope I can provide my clan with those sort of memories.

What sort of powder/balls/patches/grease/caps, etc do I need? Every BP load that I have shot (and thats not many) has been a cartridge load. I have a feeling I'm about to change that.

Mick.

Six Shot

Howdy Mick,

I also have the same 1860 Commemorative set of Colts. They were made in the 1970's by Colt using some castings made by Uberti and assembled and sold by Colt. In my opinion that makes them Colts. I shoot mine by pouring 24 grains of Hodgdon's Triple 7 into each cylinder then placing a greased wad (like Wonder Wads) over the powder, seating a .451 lead ball with the loading lever and capping the nipples with a #10 percussion cap, cock the hammer, aim, brace yourself and pull the trigger and then go pick up your hat! Have fun! They're a blast. Literally!

I use a .454 ball with 28 grains of 3f black powder and a lubricated wad in front of the powder and behind the ball. The cap is a Remington # 10 . I use Tresso nipples. I see Six Shot use a .451 ball. You may have to try several diameters to see what works best in your revolver. You want to shave a slight ring of lead off the ball when you seat it in the cylinder. My book for 2nd generation Colt's says use .454 to .457 ball with .457 preferred. You will  want to try either a size 10 or 11 cap and see what one fits the nipple best. Have fun with those good lookin' Colt Cavalry's.

Four Fingers,
Just thought I'd mention Black Powder is always measured by volume not weight and of course all of the loads mentioned in CAS are at your own risk. You may want to download any loads mentioned by 10% and work your way up.
Black powder is the only way to go. I've been shooting alot of the holy black in cartridge revolvers as of late.
Have fun, it's a wonderful sport.

Yeah, thanks for the reminder. I always wondered why BP people didn't express loads in cubic measurement like Lee do with their dippers, autoloaders, etc.

Me too ,  ::)
I also have a set of these beautiful revolvers , and another one from another  set  :)
Great shooters , and  I recently purchased a R&D cylinder 45 Colt , for the Uberti revolvers , and the cylinder fit the one 1860 like it was made for it , perfect .   :D
But the cylinder would not go on the other two in a  set .  ???   R&D offered to fit them for me if I wanted , thank you . :)

So with the Treso nipples in the 1860's and my new 1866 rifle , I may be ready for the plainsmen  / Pistoleer  class  ;D

I've also got a U.S. Cavalry Commemorative Set.  They are Colts and were made in 1977.  They are transition guns between the C and F series 2nd Gens.  I don't shoot mine - I prefer my 2nd Gen 1851 Navies - but know a couple fellow club members that do shoot theirs and have a good time doing it.
