Horse Barn Progress
« on: November 06, 2007, 01:50:25 PM »
Here is how my horse barn is looking to date. I've got the barn siding on, the false front is up, and I've got the doors and window frames cut in.

I still need to cut the openings for for the doors ands window in the barn siding, that will be my next step and then make and fit the doors and windows.

The boys and myself work on this as time permits... On the right side of the barn is where I am going to build my 16 X 24 foot log work shop. I'll probably work on this through the winter between hunting seasons and as finances permit.

I've tried to maintain the "Old Timey" look of 19th century barns and I'm going to have a blacksmith friend of mine make wrought iron hinges and hardware for the doors and windows.

Thanks Slim.......
I've got a nice six point set of Bull Elk antlers that I'm going to mount across the top of the double door opening in the front, shown in the photo.

Eagle Eyes....
Unfortunately this set of antlers is from a hunt I did in 1987, I re-injured a muscle tear and could only hunt for two days this trip. We did have a young grizzly bear come into camp and finish up my wife's chili we had left on the camp stove...

I wish I could have got a photo of my son William and myself standing there watching this bear eat our supper less then thirty yards away...both of us with loaded 300 Win. Mags with our knees knocking together just in case he didn't get enough to eat.

But...he took off when he saw us and never returned...Normally we keep all our food high up and out of reach of the bears..but left the chili from the day before.

I've hunted this area five times (my son's first trip) ..this is the first time I've seen a grizzly that close...and...... the first time we came home with no meat.

Plenty of Elk.....no good clean shots...we had Bull tags only.....saw a small herd of wild Bison up there too....first time for that treat.

The only camera we took was a video camera...we got plenty of video of the Elk and Bison......I know it has nothing to do with this  sport (CAS) but once I get it edited I may post it here.

We're already planning a return trip; for next year.....

Once I get the doors and windows cut out and installed, the barn painted and my shop built, the stables on the left will have fake double doors to look like a small saloon with the appropriate 19th century signs and advertisements. The main barn will have a Livery sign on it (I'm not sure exactly what it will say as yet) and my shop front will be made up like an old log jail with appropriate signs and wanted postures....

Deadeye...

That sounds like a real neat idea....Oh, in camp we cooked our chili in a large frying pan...needless to say once the bear had finished we didn't have to wash it...... ;D

Bill, sorry to hear about the muscle tear.  I've had a few of those in my day...they tend to slow things down a bit.. :-[

Sounds like you all were kind of touch and go with that bear for a minute.. :o

The barn is looking good!!!!!

The saloon?  You can call it 'The Five Aces Saloon' - where 'the women are cold, and the beer is hot'... ;D

Anyway, looks to be an excellent job!

Wow, what a trip!!! Sorry about the muscle injury. They can be pretty painful. Alot of interesting wildlife interaction for you guys. I for one would love to see any footage you have from the trip. I will be leaving next week for the annual fall fishing trip with my father in Hatteras NC. Can't wait!! I really need a vacation!!!!

I think that your barn, when completed, may end up on a tourist brochure if you guys get tourists that is.
