cylinder sloppy!!

Cylinder sloppy!!    well I dont know what other way to explain it!!
The cylider on my Pietta 1851 sherrif has got a forward/backward movement that I feel is a little more than it should be when comparing it with my other opentops (Another one is also a Pietta) and they do not have anything like as much `slop`!!

Any help here pards I would appreciate

As you note, all the open tops have some fore and aft movement.  Problem with the basic design, i.e., no cylinder bushing.  The arbor to barrel fit on most Piettas is usually pretty good.  How much clearance do you have?  When the hammer goes forward it drives the cylinder forward until it hits the back of the barrel.  So, when it is fired the gap is at its smallest.  As long as the gun fires OK, I wouldn't worry.  One thing to check is to take off the barrel and remove the cylinder.  Put the barrel back on the arbor at about 90 degrees to the frame and then twist it until it comes in contact with the frame.  Ideally, the barrel and frame should mate with maybe a couple of thousands overlap.  If the barrel is sitting away from the frame you can remove a little material from the tip of the arbor and it will move the barrel inward and reduce the gap.

In all honesty the gun performs fine!  BUT I would just like ta tighten things up a tad!!

That is called "endshake" in gunsmith terminology. It's relatively easy to fix with bushings on MODERN revolvers, not so on cap 'n ball revolvers. Perhaps "Rifle" will chip in here as I just sent him a '60 Army with a lot of endshake for repair.
