1851 conversion - loading lever retainer
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:27:17 AM »
What do most of you folks do with the loading lever retainer when you add the ejection assembly?

It seems to stick out for no reason now...I am thinking to remove it and fill in with a wedge but have never seen the wedges availible...

Looks good either way.....If by wedge you mean dovetail, most gunsmiths will have, can get, or make a dovetail filler as used to fill the rear sight dovetail on a scoped rifle.  You could just cut off the catch on the barrel and blend it in with the octagonal shape.... To fill the cut in the barrel lug you would need to fit a block of steel and retain it with the lever pivot screw, or in this case, the ejector retainer screw.

On original conversions, the post was ground flush to the barrel surface(s) and refinished. I suggest the same, only using cold blue to touch-up. If it doesn't look "perfect", it will look very P-C (that's Period-Correct :D), IMO.
