Your outfit looks like a good start, I agree you look too clean. Small question, what is the pouch on your cartridge belt for and do you ever wear any of your cowboy stuff away from the gun range?
There is an interesting and enlightening book of illustrations called "The American West in the Nineteenth Century" by John Grafton. It is comprised of illustrations originally found in Harpers Weekly, The Illustrated London News & Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. It's a Dover book: ISBN 0-486-27304-0 $10.95 for those interested.
On pages 159, 161, and 165 are illustrations of various scouts. A commonality amongst them is comfortable looking clothing, neckerchiefs, fringed buckskin jackets, hunting knives and one in particular sports a wide C.W. carbine sling.
