Beading on leather??
« on: May 20, 2007, 07:19:09 AM »
Guys, any thoughts on where one might pick up some basics on beadcraft?  I'm not wanting to take on a new hobby but would like to be able to do some level of accent using beading in the overall design.  Just looking at the few pre-beaded items that are offered by Tandy, I can see no way to trim or fit these without them unraveling, right/wrong?  They also appear so tightly strung that sewing them to leather seems improbable, are they glued on?

In the pre-Leather Factory years, Tandy seemed to be big in bead craft.  They used to devote several pages of their catalog to beading and offered at least a dozen or so books on the subject.  Only recently have I realised the traditional link to and beauty of beadwork on leather.  AHHHH, a great new subject for the next WILD ROSE leatherworking DVD to tackle!!!!

The local craft store had several books but they seemed totally unrelated to my needs, mostly jewelry and such.  Any hints or directions to something simple (and applicable) would be appreciated.

Check out www.nativetech.org and www.crazycrow.com - CC has both supplies, books and DVD's, as well as several on-line how-to's.........those will get you started...any questions ask away.........

IMO - The pre-beaded, imported stuff is mainly crap and isn't worth the money or effort........

To start - I do most of my beadwork onto braintan or German Tan (available from CC) and then sew that to bark tan (such as holsters) or use it by itself for other gear such as pouches...

Thanks Nolan, I will see what I can find in these links.  Wish I had taken more of an interest in some of these skills when I was younger and learning came a bit easier.  NAAAh, learning was never easy!!!
