NCOWS DA Championship
« on: May 07, 2007, 11:42:08 AM »
At the KVC-NCOWS 2-gun Regional shoot last weekend there was a side match to determine the NCOWS Double Action Champion for 2007.

There were three stages.
1) A std. Nevada sweep of 3 targets at gun fight distance. (7 yds.)
2) Shoot the hats of of two drummers (5-6 yds.) and dump any extra rounds at an IPSC target at 25 yds.
3) A Zulu sweep of 3 poppers from 7 to 12 yds.

There were some technical difficulties with the timer on the 1st stage which caused some chaglenges for scoring.  So on Sunday morning there was a shoot off of the top three shooters.  Repeat stage one, winner take all.

Winning time was 6.74 seconds, clean.

Mike is being modest.

He made John and I look like a couple of beginners at the shoot-off.

Congrats Books!
For those that don't normally shoot West of the Missouri River, can you please explain a 'Nevada sweep' and a 'Zulu sweep'? We have a lot of newbies reading this that may not be familiar with your nomenclature and terminology.
Best regards and good lexing!

Mike is being modest.

 :-[ ;D :-[ ;D :-[

A Nevada Sweep is; start at one end of a string of targets engaging them all; then sweep back with remaining rounds. I think.

With all the different sweeps that match directors assume that all shooters know, I get confused.  So I invented the Zulu* sweep and the Sgt York sweep.

The Zulu sweep is based on real combat.  Shoot the closest target first and work your way back.

* I was going to call it the Swahilie sweep but Zulu was easier to spell.

Books - What was the most commonly used/majority double action at the shoot? Just curious to know.

I'd love to take my 1881 S&W out to such a thing at some point...! Also would like to bust out the Starr for a go at it. A DA event sounds very cool, indeed.

Congrats on the win (and, even more importantly, on your modesty!).

Monterey Jack;

I was using a S&W DA .44 (Russian)

Other DAs used were;

Colt 1892
Webley RIC
Belgian Bulldog/Webley copy

Griz has a Starr that he shoots well.  If he had used it instead of the Webley, I might not have pulled it off. (The Webley malfunctioned during the shoot-off.)

Most of the DAs that I have seen in action are Colts. (Lightings, 1878s, 1889s & the 1892s etc.)

Everybody seems to be enamoured with the S&W DAs in .44-40.  That round (unless down loaded) is pretty hot and hard to handle in that pistol.  It is sweet to shoot in .44 Russian.

Books - My S&W is also in .44 Russian. Curious to know what primers you use - I tried Federal but they got mangled up pretty bad from that huge frickin' firing pin. I'll try CCI as they're a bit more firm. Any advice on this is appreciated.

Nice to hear that there was a wide variety of the DAs there.

Hope to make it down Kansas way some time to participate in the fun.

I'm still experimenting with load, all of them were with Starline Brass & CCI large magnum pistol primers.

For the match I was using 200 grain bullets and 18 grains of APP (2f) and 18 Pyrodex for the shoot off. ( I was out of the other load.)

The first loads I tried (246 grain bullets that came with the pistol) grouped outstandingly, but way high.  The above loads were better but still high.

   Hockeypuckey! Those full-house 44WCF"s are a dream to shoot in the 'ol Smith, it's just that the darned sights are soooooooooo small! ;D My plan right now is to shoot nothing but 19th century guns for the entire National Shoot. Should be a real hoot.
