If I were alive back then I would have been a blacksmith, a trader, or some other blue coller 1800's guy.

Any advice?

Take a look at two forums here - the 'Historical Society Forum' and the 'NCOWS Forum.

Both feature posts on creating your outfit and perusing through the 'back pages' may give you ideas.

Also - go to your local library and check out the Time-Life series - 'The Old West' - for good photographs.

You're describing the average working man of the era - and besides the leather apron being a mark of his job as a blacksmith - it's easy to create.

For a very basic outfit:

Band-collar shirt - collar stud - linen/paper collar - coat - high-waisted trousers, w/button fly and  w/o belt loops - suspenders - brogans - vest (lapels preferred) - hat.

Anything more - you add as you find a need for it.

Fabrics should be wool or cotton.

Knowing what to look for - a lot of this can be found at thrift stores - so get to reading...

Also - knowing what you need and pursuing it will be far easier on your wallet, since you can hopefully resist impulse purchases.

And when you've got questions - just ask.

Vaya,

Good clear pictures are a valuable resource, the Time-Life The West series has a lot of good ones.  But one of the best is here:

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award98/nbhihtml/pshome.html

The Solomon Butcher Collection.  Go to it do some searches and brigg the pictures all the way up.  If you can't get them so they more than fill the screen and you have to scroll, let me know and I'll help you.

Del, I'm glad you posted this site, my father spent his early youth in North Platte Nb and told many stories of swimming the platte river. We still have several relatives throught Nb. I visited there several times as a teenager, the thing I remember the most was how friendly all the people were. I really enjoyed looking at the pictures in the Butcher collection.
Thank you, and Go Huskers

Sorry for the mention on this forum, I was under the impression that being from the great state of Nebraska "being a Husker " was like a religious experience. ( all my Nb relatives take great pride in being HUSKERS)  :-[
