Ideal Tool .44 CMR/WCF
« on: May 20, 2013, 09:21:51 AM »
So, I have been wanting one of the original Ideal tools to start my hobby of reloading. I know there are better and more advanced reloading systems on the market, but this is where I want to start. I considered purchasing one of the Lyman 310 handpresses to start, but this one fell into my hands at a better deal than I can find on the Lyman. Interesting that this one is marked CMR and WCF, which I understand is rare. Does anyone here use one to reload? Also, this one is missing the decapping pn. I have read that replicas are made, but I cannot seem to find the source.

I have a Winchester loading tool for the .44 WCF that I have used once in awhile.
The CMR likely stands for Colt Lightning Rifle and  WCF - Winchester Center Fire.

Grenadier ,the Ideal loading tool is a great way to reload ammo.I have been handloading for about 35 yrs. and have quite a bit of reloading tools .Three presses and a list of dies. But for my old Winchester's I prefer to use my Winchester, reloading handtool's and Ideal reloading tool's. I have the time to reload this way,and enjoy the work. These tool's are realy simple to use ,and make good ammo. When I purchased my 45-75 wcf reloading tool ,it like most was missing the decapping pin.Not having an original pin to measure, I used a empty fired 45-75 wcf case for my measurement requirements and a 40-60 wcf decapping pin for an idea how it should look. I do have a metal lathe ,so I started to fabricate one . With looking at pictures of the real deal I was able to make one in less than an hr. works great, and look's like it came with the tool. If you cannot find a decapping pin your local machine shop should be able to fabricate one for you with case measurements, the tool, and a bullet, . Hope this helps you . If you get the tooling this type of reloading can be fun. Doing like it was in the old day's......    Dusty Texian.

Being the history dork that I am, I have to say I am more excited about reloading this way than with a modern design. Luckily, one of my best friends is a machinist. If I can find some measurements, I am sure I can talk him into making one for me.

When I bought my original 73 Win I got a win reloading tool with it and it  was missing the decapping pin. We made one at
work on the lathe, your friend should be able to help you out.
