Howdy
« on: March 04, 2012, 12:39:55 AM »
Just saying hello. I'm a long time lurker and finally decided to register. I don't shoot competitively, but I'm an avid affectionado of single actions and the Holy Black, especially cartridge conversions. I have a '51 Navy conversion project in the works, it presently being at Hoof Hearted's place having some work done. Looking forward to chatting about conversions with ya'll.    8)

Green Swamp. In beautiful (and infamously well armed) Polk County.   ;D

I'm always looking for people to shoot with, but I'm not into competition. Cowboy Action has gotten like IPSC, too many gamers and stupid rules. I did ACW and WW2 reenacting for almost 20 years. Enjoyed them much more, especially the Living History's and the tacticals. I used to custom load blank ammunition and blank-adapt firearms which helped offset the expenses of the hobby. I rarely load blanks anymore but I still do the blanking mods. When I load blanks, they're for personal use. It's always fun around my place every New Year and July 4th.   ::)

Conversions are by far my favorite single actions. I lean more towards the Colt camp then the Remington. I love the Richard's conversions. I hope to have a full on custom Richard's built in the near future. I'd been shooting a Cimarron Type 2 Richards in .45LC, but my brother made me an offer on it I couldn't refuse. So I decided to do something in .38LC with the heeled slugs. So at the present I have a '51 Navy in the works. I was inspired by the '51 conversion that Hoof Hearted posted pics of a few months back. I started with a Cimarron London Navy with a R&D Ported conversion ring and cylinder with a Kirst ejector assembly. I went with the R&D because I liked the way it was attached to the frame and it features an engraved cylinder. Since I will have the whole pistol nickle plated, the roll engraving will really stand out. A set of Tru-Ivory's will round out the look. The piece is out at Hoof's place right now having the ring and cylinder fitted and the action tuned. He's also gonna fix me up with some mods to the ejector assembly to give it a more period-correct look. I cut the loading port and removed the proofs and other markings from the barrel myself. I can say it was tough to make that first file cut on a brand new pistol. Never did that before. Kind of a weird feeling, but it's gonna be worth it. It's funny looking in it's 2-tone glory right now, but I still have a bit more polishing to do before it goes off to the plater's. Maybe Hoof will post some pics as a 'work in progress' concept. I'm in no hurry to get it completed. Everything is being done in stages in order to maintain domestic tranquility.   ;D

Swampman,

All I can say is that you have obviously never shot an NCOWS match before, cause there is no IPSC and no gamer crap in NCOWS!! If you shoot good great, if you shoot bad great, if you had a good time-then that's what really mattered!!!!
You should give it a try...

Regards, John.

We certainly should talk...cause your words are poetic and Gary has done guns for me as well, In fact we spoke last night, on the next project.

Please take a few minutes and look over the NCOWS Website.... see what NCOWS is about....
The Cracker Cow Cavalry Just shot this last weekend
I shoot Richards & a Henry , another member shoots 1860 & a Henry and a Muzzle loading SXS. Several Members shoot  R&M Colt's or OT's
We have 2 , 3 or 4 gun catagories.

I'll check out the NCOWS site. My problem is I just don't move too good anymore without my walking stick, my knees are trashed. That's why I left the reenacting hobby as an active participant but I'm still active behind the scenes in an advisory capacity. I still do a lot of gun work for the WW2 crowd. Just blanked a P-38 for a fellow in PA last week. Vietnam reenacting is getting more popular and I have a prototype adjustable BFA for the AR-15/M-16 that I'm working on. I try to stay busy.

It's funny you should mention a muzzle-loading SxS. I have an old CVA SxS 12-bore with the tubes cut to 13". We used it for our CW Provost impression and nick-named it the 'Kidney-Buster'. I've only fired it live a few times, but it's really impressive. Talk about your street howitzer. And I have used a Henry repeater in the hobby since '94. I can tell many tales about keeping the Henry running under some seriously adverse conditions. Got into a nasty fight at Andersonville one year where it got so fouled I had to pour water into the action every 20 rounds to keep the carrier from dragging. That was also the last time I used 5-in-1's and adapted the carrier to use a short-case blank created from a stock dimension .45LC case. The extreme taper of the 5-in-1 case just didn't work well in the straight-walled LC chamber. Rearward obturation was poor and a lot of blow back went straight into the action. Creating a short-case load from stock brass and modifying the carrier solved the problem. I also created a short round of live ammo almost identical to the Cowboy .45 Special round so I could shoot it live without having to disassemble the action to remove the short-case modifications to the carrier. This was back in '95. I wish I had patented it now. My Henry has also achieved some YouTube stardom. It was on loan to 'Ghost Town in the Sky' in Maggie Valley, NC. for the '09 season being used by 'The Apache Kid', Robert Bradley. It can be seen in a few park videos on YouTube and on Robert's Facebook page. Robert wanted to create an Armorer's position to take care of the park's weapons and I was shmoozing for the job, hence the loan of the Henry. Unfortunately, money was tight and there was no room in the budget.

I have really good feelings about Gary working on my Navy project. The first time we spoke on the phone, we chatted for almost half an hour. He took his time and answered my questions and provided some ideas I hadn't thought of. And the pics of his work speak for themselves. After we get the Navy out of the way, I'll be talking with him about the possibility of a Type 1 Richards in .44 Colt.

Swampy, Howdy!

You mention that you don't get around well and use a cane.  I've been in SASS (Lifer) since around 1998 or so and have been almost exclusively NCOWS about 10 years now.  I'm a Member for Life.  (That means I haven't paid the Life Membership fee, but I will renew every year until I quit shooting.  You know, as in dead.

My NCOWS pards put up with my infirmities and never complain.  I walk with a cane and am nearly in a wheelchair - but I'm too proud to change.
 ::)

Don't worry a BIT about it.  I can't bend (much) to pick up brass, so I invested in a really neat Brass Wizard with extension handle from Unique-Tek.  It is so well liked and handy that both of the clubs I belong to bought them too, after seeing how well it worked for me.
http://www.uniquetek.com/site/696296/product/T1310

Otherwise, I often keep score or do the timer which I can do and sit at the same time. (I often have a portable stool, tho I did go right through the antique canvas of one, much to the delight of my Club members at the time.
 ;)

NCOWS is very "laid back" and not like IPSC at all.  Some of the SASSies  I have shot with take the competition part VERY seriously, but most were happy to slow things down some.

Have fun, WHATEVER you do!

Howdy Steel. I do believe I need to at least come out to one of Major's shoots and look things over. I saw the pics from the last shoot and everyone looked to be having fun. If nothing else, it could keep me from roaming the streets after dark and getting into mischief.  You go cow-tipping 20-30 times and you're marked for life.  :D

Ain't it always like that!?!

Give Major Dos' group a try ... you'll have fun.

But.  Don't give up ALL mischief!
