Reproduction coins/ money
« on: July 20, 2011, 06:10:05 PM »
Does anyone know of a good source of reproduction coins/ paper money that would fit Texas 1880s?

I've looked and can only find Civil War types and no coins.

Thanks.

First off, interesting name, how did you come by it....my dads name is Lewis Haynes...close...

about coins, paper: you can find lots of repro on ebuy....as for paper you can also do a search and print your own..(Forty Rod has a whole box of paper money including old Morman dollars. I have repro and real morgan dollars, and several trade dollars (but they wern't cheap either.) like you say most folks are proud of their stuff.

Sometimes you can get "circulated" coins like Morgan dollars for cheap prices and are about as cheap as the repros..

let us know what you find..

Try your hand at making your own paper currency....Somewhere in my kit, I have some with my very own likeness on it...it don't spend easy, but good for a laugh.

Thanks.

Firstly,

Know that I am very proud of my state and especially it's era of Independence from 1836 to 1845.  All that said, I love to carry and share replica scrip from The Republic.  I know this scrip was worthless in the 1880's, but it sure is fun to share with folks.

By that point, Confederate scrip was worthless too, but here's a link to some:

Also, on  ebay, I've found a good deal on replica 1870 "Double Eagle" $20 gold coins.  I bought a dozen of them (replica mind you) for about $30.  That would have been a common tender for an 1880's persona moving west.

Also, you can find actual Morgan Silver dollars in very "used" (i.e. non-collectible state) for less than $15 per coin.  I've found a bunch of 1880's Morgans on ebay and over on the SASS wire in that price range.

Hope this helps,

This would also be a good source for improvised front sights.  Pity they have to stamp "COPY" on the face, and not on the edge of the coin.  But I guess counterfeiters have it easy enough.

I have a S&W New Model Russian that some thoughtful fellow felt that needed to be bobbed down.  The result was a hack job and an attempt at a front sight that is too low.  On my to-do list is clean up the crown and install a penny.  I did find an 1883 Indian head penny at a coin vendor's booth at a gun show for 50 cents.  Still wrestling with the notion of cutting it into a front sight.  Not sure if I can bring myself to do so.   :-\

Makes me laugh that I would sooner buy an repro penny for $23 to cut in half, but balk at chopping up an original artifact to mount on another original artifact costing a mere pittance of the other.   ::)

Short Knife:

I have replaced the front sights on my Beretta Laramies with original Indian head pennies. It's not that tough, once you get the old sight out.

I understand about cutting into history like that, but such pennies are not rare and are in little danger of becoming extinct. ;)
It's also possible that your (original) Russian may have a front sight slot that's too narrow for a penny. Might need to use a dime instead. My old Smiths are like that.

If it's an original New Model Russian - use the original coin.

You 'can' use sheet sterling cut to size, though - almost any decent jeweler can help.

I use original coinage - down to and including the 5-Peso conchos on my spur leathers, and the Mexican Revolutionary monies for a later Impression.

I had had a bunch of Third Reich stuff that absolutely fascinated a local coin collector, so a trade was in order, leaving me with a leather reel bag of period coinage in 'nice' condition - exactly the kind of condition expected at that time.

It is a very cool sounding name...(mine actually comes from a family nickname. I have been called "curley" most of my life. and Cole is my real last...I even have a wanted poster from Knotts Berry Farm from many years ago with that name on it...if I could only find it in the pit of the garage.

Laura:

How is your outfit coming along?
We were planning on getting to Bonaire at Thanksgiving, but BoJon will most likely still be deployed so it will be later.  We have so much going on here in Texas I doubt if we make it to the Oct SST shoot.   I will let you know next time we head to Bonaire.

Laura, try these:

When sizing them, 3 3/8" X 7 3/8" or so will be close enough.

Not trying to be a wet blanket but those bills are still legal tender under law for the face value and copying them is considered counterfitting if I'm not mistaken. The United States has never(so far) demonetized any of its currency,it's all still worth the face value although collector value is considerally more.Private bank issues or so called "broken bank" notes are not regulated as far as copying them.

For theatrical purposes it should be okay. No one would confuse them as real money,-as the thickness, the size and the feel of the paper would not be right.

The 'horse blanket' currency has not been in circulation for over a hundred years.
Obviously, don't try to pass it off as real money.

I just tried them and even with high quality equipment the writing on the back can't be read on the left side back and nothing on the right side back. This is obviously not real money besides what the previous poster said, wrong paper, colors as well as size though close isn't dead on.
