Gloves?
« on: May 22, 2011, 10:07:23 PM »
Are gloves NCOWS allowed?  I have managed to cut my thumb once and also burn my finger prints off,  ::) so I was thinking of getting some good fitting black gloves to wear.

But are they allowed.  I know cowboys wore them.
Any suggestions to find some?  Not interested in gauntlets but some tight fitting gloves.  1880 period.

Thanks.

gentile ladies of the era often worn Kid gloves in their finery, and in riding attire.
macrame hand slips were also common with day dresses

hand slip...forgive me here I have forgotten the correct nomenclature they were not called gloves  :-\

Gloves where worn by both men and women in the 19 century. Most I've seen for women are pretty shear though but they had basically a full hand glove, a mitten which only rapped around the thumb and came up to the elbow as well as finger gloves which covered only the finger a little near the hand with the finger tips exposed.  You can see what I'm talking about here:

I'm also sure other outfitters might have other styles.

First let me say I am by no means any kind of an expert.  Modern shooting gloves IMHO would be  a no-no.  Genteel ladies wore gloves whenever they were out.   Working gloves were worn by women that worked at rough jobs, hard work.  Carrying water, out in the barn or garden or rode horses, drove wagons that sort of thing- just like the men-depending on what they could afford.  There were lace, hand knitted, hand tatted so forth dress gloves that one wore to church, out for a stroll, shopping- when in town.  Ladies gloves were made of silk, cotton, wool, leather.  Fine kid gloves would also be worn as dress gloves as well as would have been worn with walking suits , day dresses.  It was considered a sign of lower class to have rough, work worn hands.  Try doing laundry on a washboard, with lye soap, chopping firewood, hoeing in a kitchen garden and not have raw rough hands. Ladies did not have freckles on their hands or faces.  Ladies did not have calluses. Ladies were not tanned.  The length of the glove and the number of buttons were different for different use.  There were four button, six button, eight button.  Styles changed some.  Some had no fingers. These are called mitts in my copy of the 1897 Sears Roebuck & Co. cataloge. The gloves were made to match the dress if it was a fancy event.  There are books on how to make gloves if you would like to try to make your own. Celeste.

One nice thing about NCOWS, is that it's not designed for speed, so gloves wouldn't be needed if you take your time.

As above - lady's fashions and accouterments are a wide, wide field - with all manner of idiosyncracies.

A good reference point iwill be the reprints of the 'Sears, Roebuck & Co.' and the 'Montgonery Wards & Co.' catalogs dated pre-1899.

Barnes & Noble's has them periodically - as will your local Public Library.

Good Luck!

As someone said, I am no expert. But from many pictures most military wore gloves. Folks that drove teams, wagons, stage coaches, and broke horses wore gloves. Of course those in cold country and cold weather wore gloves. I've read no rules that said you could not wear gloves from our time period while shooting, as long as you can shoot safely. Just the thoughts from an old fat cowboy. Tj

in some cases gloves are a necessary accessory. My first NCOWS shoot this past weekend had temptures they said were 97 degrees. I was shooting a Henry and a Pedersoli 10 gage. I had to wrap my neck scarf around my left hand while shooting the Henry and while carrying both to the unloading table. The full loads and the sun got the long guns so hot it would actually burn an uncovered hand. I had to hold the shotgun so the wood fore arm rested on my palm. Not sure yet about NCOWS rules if its ok to shoot rifle/pistol/shotgun as a three gun set. If its has to be 2 pistols then I wouldn't be able to wear a glove for 2nd pistol as I shoot double Dualist.
See ya when the smoke clears.

To my knowledge, no problem wearing either:

a) ladies gloves ....provided you are a female...if your a man wearing ladies gloves..well, folks are just gonna talk  ;)
b) mens gloves, cotton, canvas, leather, gauntlet or other styles. men or women wear these equally well.

Personally, I DO wear a pair of gloves (generally fringed leather gauntlets) during the early & late shooting season. I'm not as robust as I used to be and while most folks around these parts remove their coats & gloves when its their turn to shoot, I generally leave mine on as it is more comfortable to shoot when I'm not shivering....and its actually PC to wear them. If I used a Henry, I'd want to keep the glove handy all season long. Style points for sure..but it does add a few seconds to my time during shotgun loading.

Any suggestions where to get a good pair of leather or cotton gloves?

Cherokee Bodie- weren't you in Columbia, SC?  It was only 96 degrees.   :-\

Laura,

Take a look here:  http://www.westernemporium.com/store/ladies_oldwest_gloves.php

The styles they sell there are consistant with the gloves offered in the 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog I have.

I recently got a pair of TIG welding gloves that have to be the most comfortable gloves I have ever worn. Super supple kidskin with heavy suede upper. The style is much like old cavalry gauntlets, only a bit shorter. I believe the brand name is Black Stallion. That is one of the only problems. The gaudy marking on the 'skirt' or whatever you call it, above the hand. They are white and saddle tan.

Laura, the deerskin work gloves like they sell at Lowes, Home Depot, etc. can be very similar to work gloves "back in the day."  Try to find the type that have a cotton drawstring/cord rather than an outside elastic band, but also doesn't have a colored plastic keeper.  I found a really nice pair that have the elastic (on the top side near the wrist) sewn into the inside.  They have a yellow lining around the top, but that can be OK.  (A Sharpie can re-color the cloth or leave it alone - yellow is an authentic color - so will wearing them and doing dirty jobs.  ;))

I  have several pair that I also use during non-CAS times to get them look lived-in and authentically dirty.  These gloves are normally a tan/yellow color and the deerskin makes them VERY tough!  Like boots, getting them wet then wearing them dry will really fit them to your hands.  (And will get your hands dyed, too!)  The ones I got were actually marked "Ladies XL" because that's the type of hand shape I seem to have - generally small, but with a long spread.  I can cover an octave + 2 notes on a piano.  Middle C to the next octave E.  (Or down)

 ;D

I also have a pair of white Military gauntlets as well as a med. brown set of fringed gauntlets.  The fringies are THE BEST fitting gloves I've ever had and fit as if they were poured on to my hands. (Again, Ladies XL)
