Mid Range ??? Sharps in 45 colt
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:48:15 PM »
Howdy Pards
I recently came across a Sharps in 45 lc . It sports a 30 inch octagon barrel . I have been playing around with it and it's a fun gun .
It's a full scale rifle with decent iron sights . Will post some pictures in a few days when I get a chance to take them .

Rowdy, glad to see you like the shirt, I learned a valuable lesson on tanning, that is to let the hides set for
a while before you make a project with them. During the drying/softening step all the fibers get
sttrreettcchheeeddd to make them soft, and after a while they go back to their original positions.
We made that shirt shortly after tanning, and we were very happy with it, until it shrunk and I couldn't
hardly move in it.  But it's wonderful to see a friend making good use of it.

Thanks again for the shirt that was my best purchase at the Convention . Now  the Sharps in 45 colt may not be the best choice for a long range rifle . But for shooting  200 or less at ringer targets ,not knock downs it's GREAT . Hope to have a video on You Tube in a couple weeks .

Sounds cool, Rowdy.  Is that one of those 3/4 or 7/8 scale Sharps repros?  While I wouldn't parade mine around during an NCOWS match, it'd be a cool gun for those of us who simply like nice hardware!

Thanks for the invite!  (Even 'tho it wasn't aimed JUST at me.)  I can't promise.  My knee is still waaay skew-iffie!  I had to miss the Train Robbery today with the GLFMC posse - but that worked out OK, since the train broke and the robbery was canceled!

The 45 colt Sharps didn't shoot worth a CRAP at the Eastern Regional Mid Range . We were shooting out to 180 yards and it didn't hit squat hit several people spotting for me . Live and learn . I have a Remington RB in 45-70 and it will shoot .

Rowdy,

Sorry to hear about the pistol caliber Sharps.  I was hoping that gun would ring the steel for you.  Have you put it on a bench yet?  Does it group at 100 yards?  I was really hoping that gun would do you well.  Those "mid range" shoots are becomin' real popular around here.  I've been itching for a rifle that is easy to shoulder, shoot off-hand, and can engage a target out to 200 yards.   I just traded for a Browning '86 saddle ring carbine in .45-70.  It is light and points quick.  I'm just hoping it shoots well.

Rowdy,
Sorry to hear that your rifle didn't perform well for you at the match.  I do know that a 45 Colt rifle will perform at longer distances with the right ammunition.  Here's a 5 shot group at 300 meters (327 yards) on a steel javelina silhouette.
Rifle used was a Marlin .45 Colt Cowboy 24" barrel with a tang sight fired from a double sandbagged rest.
Ammunition was loaded with 40 grs. of Swiss FFG and the RCBS 250 gr. cast bullet sized .454" lubed with SPG.
It works!

The javelina is 9" high x 22" long   The group measures about 4 1/2" high x 7" wide.

River City John has a cute little Roller in .45 colt he shoots at GAF matches - 'course, that's at CAS ranges, not reaching "out there". . .

I have shot at our steel buffalo target at 200 yds. And hit it. 'Course, the dang thing is almost life size.
