Frontier Cartridge Wild Bunch - Part 2
« on: August 21, 2010, 05:09:12 PM »
Had a hoot today.  I put 100 rounds of BP 45 ACP ammo through my Springfield GI at our monthly match.  I had one stovepipe on round 36, but no further malfunctions.  And it was a 100+ degree day here in southern Texas.  The gun had a lot of greasy black gunk liberally dispersed all over, but it never slowed down.  I was using the 200 grain DD/PUK Big Lube with 16.5 grains of Goex FFFg.  I've proved to myself now that the gun is reliable over a complete match in adverse conditions.  Now I'll just continue to have fun with it.

Maybe SASS will introduce a Frontier Cartridge Wild Bunch category??  ::)

Good on you Aggie,

The One True Powder is truly universal.  I'm glad to learn that the DD/PUK/ROA-II bullets run good in your 1911.  Pukin' Dog is doing a parallel experiment with his 1911 and is also having very good luck with it.

I'm thinkn' that the short case and high density load is pretty well sealing your chamber and preventing excess blowback.  I get similar results with Cowboy 45 Special brass in my 1860 open tops with Kirst Konverter cylinders.  That brass has the same interior volume as 45ACP but has a 45 Colt rim.

I shot a match last weekend with it and again, my open tops ran great with no treatment throughout the match.  When I cleaned them, I found very little blowback.  I cleaned the cylinder and barrel and put the gun(s) back on the shelf ready to run for Fire in the Hills this coming weekend.  It'll be interesting to see how they run for a full 12 stage annual match plus side matches without cleaning. . .  I'll report back.  FWIW, I'm running the EPP-UG bullets.

Opentops run great with almost anything due to having the large "arbor guard" on the front of the cylinder. Running a 45 colt rifle will really test your cartridge for jamming up with blowby.  Haven't been able to do it yet but am trying new things all the time.

A .45 ACP loaded to the brim with 3FG (about 20 grains or so, as I recall), and compressed by a 230 grain round nosed bullet works just dandy in a Thompson, too.  However, after a full 20-round magazine on full-auto, it's somewhat difficult to make out the target, or just about anything else in the neighborhood for the smoke!  Black Powder is indeed a truly universal powder!

(BTW, that experiment was done a LONG time ago, in a different lifetime... Where's my woolly Chaps, anyway?  ;) )

Cheers!

Picked up my Norc last monday and shot it the next day with 18 grs Swiss No 2 under a J/P 200 gr Big Lube.  ;D
It did really well, no fouling in the gun and the barrel was clean after 1 wet and 2 dry patches, just like my Rugers and Rossi
with the same bullet.  ;D
Pictures will follow after I turned it into a 1911/1911A1 hybrid ( long-trigger, flat MSH and a pair of double diamonds )

45 ACP and C45Spl have the same interior volume.  They are basically the same brass with different heads.  I've shot the J/P-45-200 over 1.3cc of Schuetzen black powder at a number of matches now out of my open tops, with Kirst Konverters, and ROAs.  I even had a fellow Gunfighter shoot my brace of 60s after a match so he could experience the One True Powder.  He was impressed.  He said "WOW, now I know what you are doing" and his grin was huge.

FWIW, my 60s and ROAs clean up very easily and I have no blow back issues at all.  They recently ran the entire annual match at Fire in the Hills without cleaning and they never balked once.  The cylinders still spun free when I got around to cleaning them a week later.

So, you 1911 Wild Bunch shooters with slab sided guns stoked with Genuine Powder ammo have something to look forward to .

I am shooting fontier cartridge all the time and since wild bunch is getting more popular overhere I wanted to try BP in my Norc. ;D
The look on the faces when I shoot the 1911 with BP is something to look forward to. :o
With a sizerdie reamed out to 0.472 I don´t have any blowback issues in my Rossi and they still fit in my Rugers.
The guns are easy to clean after shooting my lube and your bullets and they keep working.

FYI, there are increased risks of firing black powder firearms on indoor ranges.

BP has a fair amount of unburned propellant ejected from the muzzle. This can accumulate & light-off. I know someone who was injured in an indoor range incident whereas the material which combusted (not BP) was thought to be non-flammable.....well, nearly any dust can comust. My associate ducked the fireball and now can joke about the time his eyebrows, eyelashes and other facial hair was singed off...he got a nice temporary tan, too. Just like he came back from a tropic vacation, but without the airfare.

Take care,
Slim

@ litl rooster
Yes, we do have good ventilation on the range because we shoot alot of BP there.

@ Montana Slim
I thought that that modern stuff left alot of unburned stuff and that BP burned away (love the muzzleblast btw).
Anyway, the range is cleaned every day.
