Now here's a movie worth some discussion.
     Hadn't seen it in YEARS.  It was made in 1970 and definately a sign of the times as movie making goes.  It bounces back and forth between comedy and serious drama throughout--you're never quite sure what to expect.  Hoffman did a great job with all the versatility and I have to say, that in the end, I enjoyed it.  Could have done with out the "gunfighter phase" sequence but I liked the portrayals of Wild Bill and Custer.
     I'm sure many will disagree, but I'd love to hear other opinions on this one.

That book and movie were among my favorites when I was in high school.  I watched it again a few months ago and I thought that the gunfighter phase was about as funny a scene as I've seen in a long time.  I appreciated the subtle humor, like when he was trying to mimic Wild Bill.  I still laugh when I think of him tipping back in his chair and trying to put his feet up just like Wild Bill.

I'm not the huge fan that I was 30 years ago, but I thought it was a great movie.  The book was even better.  One of the times I read it, I was on the train crossing Montana and the scenery just added to the effect.

I gotta admit, when he tried to put that first boot up and was too short reach, I got a good laugh.  Lands the second one and the legs slip out under the chair.  Now that I think on it, it was a good scene--I just wish the whole "use yer snake eyes" trick really worked.

     "Sometimes the magic doesn't always work"  He WAS great.

I had my wife watch it with me and told her it was like Forrest Gump but set in the old west.

I love the movie, but like another poster said, the book is better.  Lots of great guns mentioned in the book.  Has the same biting satirical narration as the movie, only more and better.
