PHOTOGRAPH DEPICTS A GROUP OF COWBOYS, ALL ON HORSEBACK, STANDING AMONG A GROUP OF TREES. THERE ARE FIVE MEN ALL DRESSED IN TYPICAL WESTERN STYLE. THE BACK OF THE PHOTOGRAPH STATES THAT IT WAS TAKEN IN MALLARD TEXAS IN 1890.
ALBUMEN PRINT / CABINET CARD.

Just a side note on some of these pictures. Are we breeding bigger horses these days or are cowboys from that era taller?
Some of those horses look positively runty.

I did some research on Mallard, Texas. It is still in existence and it is located in the southeastern corner of Montague County. Montague County is a couple of counties north of Fort Worth.

Yeah, but most of them mustangs or cow ponies of that day could out work any horse of todays breeding!!!!
Smarter also.

It looks like they all have their pants over their boots. Does that suggest this was posed rather than impromptu?

I think those boys are dressed to go to town. No ropes on the saddles.

It took a bit of breeding to get bigger horses. I've worked cattle from dusk 'til dark on the same pony. Most old time Coiwboys had a string to use. I'm not real sure horses then were any tougher or smarter than today's working horse. 'Scar' is 25 years old and still rides pretty good.
