Just traded into this 38-40 1873 Winchester manufactured in 1889. It looks like may be a very old re-blue, but has a shootable bore so I thought I'd give it a home.
Now I'll have to find a 38-40 SA !! Might as well set up a 1889-1890 persona too! ;D

Ya know these new Uberti 73's are real nice and all, but there is something about a 100+ year old Winchester that just say CHARACTER. Very nice....   ;)

Very nice, and I am sure you will be happy with the .38 (more of a .40) - 40 caliber. I also own a .73 in this caliber with a "shootable" bore. Mine has a fairly pitted bore although strong rifling. If I work to keep it clean when I'm finished and use tallow on the bore, it seems to shoot fine out to 50 yards or so. Mine came out of the factory in '88. An original 73 is fun to shoot. Always fun wrapping your arms around history.

Now you need a .38-40 SAA to go with it so that you can develop a late 19th century Texas Ranger persona. I recall some writing that at that time they liked the .38-40 as it was a "hard hitting" cartridge.

Looks good. L have a 73 made in 1882 in 44/40, my bore and chamber were pretty worn.
so I had it relined and now it shoots great and cleans in a fraction of the time. Theres
something about the originals  they just reeeek of history, I've been trying for 3 years
to get mine to talk but not a word so far
