Go back to the original photo in question and look at his hands. Whatever he did it wasn't easy work. He also has kind of a wornout look to his face.  Just because he wore studio props doesn't mean he wasn't so kinda outdoorsman.

Might have grown up on a farm back east and spent his life picking up rocks.  No matter, the point is you can't tell a lot from a photo that most likely used studio props.  No more than you can tell from one today someone had taken with props at the state fair.  Lots of photographers used props back then, study enough pictures and you can even see guys wearing the same gun and gun belt. ::)
