I don't know how in-depth you want to research but I thought I'd share these with you.

This may be "too much info" or it may be stuff you already know, but I found this page which has a map of the "Native American Tribes of Texas."  It has links to recommended history books.

     http://www.native-languages.org/texas.htm

I also found these lists of sources of info and illustrations on Texas Indian Tribes:
     http://www.archaeolink.com/texas_indian_tribes_texas_native.htm
     http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/texas/index.htm
     http://www.texasindians.com/

The Comanche were obviously a big factor within the state, but up here in our area (DFW Metroplex) apparently the Wichita indian tribe was a pretty big deal. The Handbook of Texas Online has some potential sources of info in it's bibliography section on the Wichita Indians here:
     http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/WW/bmw3.html

I'm guessing if you do a search on specific tribal names you may find pictures and illustrations that'll be useful.

With all respect intended, there's no way I can answer that.  They were, and are, so personal, individual and spiritual, and identified or discovered in so many ways, that anything I could say would be meaningless.  It would be far better for you to ask yourself that question during a period of deep reflection.

I followed your words, and this is the finished tomahawk:

I enjoyed creating this personal weapon/tool.  I plan on building a few more to pass out as door prizes at our SW Regional match.

Simple and elegant! It looks great. I'd love to win one!
