Winter storm 09
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:43:10 AM »
What a winter storm. Never have seen so much ice. Trees down, limbs every where. Power lines down, 90% of my county with out power (my house also). Several surrounding countiers 100%. My power is on now, but the line coming into the house is laying on the roof. That line is insulated, we reported and were told it would be ok till they could respond. Without power for a little over a week. The nearest city Hartford, KY is still with out power. Hospital running on generators. We got by on a kerosine heater and candles. Not good but better than a lot. It may surprize you what you can do. We were stocked up and that was a big plus. Thank goodness we did not loose water or telephone. This is the worse winter storm I have been through.  Do hope my NCOWS family have done better. Come on spring. TJ

The news we've seen, it sure looks like you guys took a beating,  we're in NW Arkansas, south of the worst part here, lots of ice, lost power, when we lose power, waters gone too.  we had a bunch of it caught in containers,  the house was only out for 36 hours,  we had a generator to run the lights and TV, no phone line for Internet,  the line that goes to water our turkeys was off for 5 days. ran the generator over there in the daytime,

we got all power back now, hope everything works out good for everybody over there.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

Feel for you...down here those conditions mean HURRICANE ..course we don't have the COLD
which is deadlier than 100 degrees and humidity at near 100%
when planets align...do the deal !

"This is the worse winter storm I have been through."

Agree with you 100% TJ, though we got "just" 9" of snow, I'd much rather have that than the ice. I bought and hauled a 8000 watt generator down to my Dad's house this last weekend. He lives just north of Mammouth Cave Ky. and I have to say it looks like a war zone down there. It took almost 2 days for a crew to cut their way down to where he lives, but fortunately he was fine! Now he has everything he needs but still has to boil water from the county water system. The power co. told him it might be 4 weeks to get power back on down there :o   A person sure doesn't apreciate how much we depend on electricity 'til there ain't none. ;D  Glad to hear you came through it ok TJ.

That was somethin' wasn't it! I just got back from a month at a Locksmith / Safe Entry school in Nicholasville, and can't remember ever seeing an ice storm like that!

Being from the northern half of Michigan I am used to power outages and Winter, but we havent seen ice like THAT in a long while! (knock on wood)

On the bright side, you shouldnt have a shortage of camp fire wood this year! Good luck on the recovery Pard!

Howdy Pards
We love the 1880's until we have to survive like those days.No heat no lights and it was cold . Went and picked up my parents which had no power and no HEAT and we made the BEST of a BAD situation . We are lucky we have a gas cook stove , and gas logs which means we had HEAT . My parents stayed 5 days with us it was Great my son and my father played cards laughed and enjoyed the days . We are lucky we had power most of the time  but when we look back we will remember card games and all being together, trees with limbs breaking and falling all night  .

When I saw it on the news I was thinking of you boys.  I think it was in 77 when we had our worst ice storm. We were over a week without power.  I moved the wife and kids to my folk's house but mostly stayed to keep the pipes from freezing.  I have hot water heat so I could heat the boiler up but I just couldn't circulate the water.  I had to depend on convection to keep things above freezing.  Darn it was COLD :o

Well!  I have to respond.  Today I walked to the local mall in my T-shirt.  Snowdrops are up, crocuses are soon to follow, and heather never stopped blooming.  Officially we are suffering a drought.  Our reservoir is estimated to be only 69% full by spring.

On the other hand, my son who lives west of London was snowed in all Monday & Tuesday.  All that after being stranded at SEATAC both ways at Christmas.

ps  THURSDAY 5 FEB 09;  Son's University in Uxbridge, west of London was closed.  THREE inches of snow, and the staff said "why bother".  DIL drove to work at her school in conditions that most Canadians & US Northerners would call routine.  Only 10% of the students showed up, and she was one of the few staff, that had to babysit them for the rest of the day.

I wonder how PUK, Ned, and Angel eyes are doing in England?  Or even Qball (Sweden) Capt. Augustus (Norway) and LJ Wolf (Germany)?
