Looking for an 1851 Navy with a worn look

An elderly friend would like to recreate a gun his grandfather carried in the Civil War.   It was an 1851 36cal. round brass trigger guard.   It had a brown flap holster with no insignia, and a US buckle and belt.   He remembers it from when he was young.  Would anyone have a well worn replica they wish to sell?   Ace

Cimarron has new guns with "orignal finish " , but my guess is your friend is looking for a used gun.

perhaps not this aged

If he wants he can get a new gun or used and it can be aged and defarbed....
I've done quite a few for movie guns, I'd be glad to help him.

Looks like you've gotten a source for the Navy, I don't know if the Major is talking about doing the whole setup in his post. If he isn't you might check out the following link for the belt and holster end of things.http://www.carricoleather.com/

I think it was a personal revolver and holster on a infantry belt and buckle.  Cimmeron does not seem to have the 1851 in an aged finnish.   I told him maybe he might want it as it was new.   How would you age a gun and belt?  Ace

I guess you may be right I looked at Cimarrons site  :-\ ...

As far as age finishing a gun.. it's matter of removing the non-period marks (de-farbing)
I then use White vinagar to work the blue down..I use browning and card in, then 0000 steel wool
and brown and card again. I leave it darker in tight spots as it should be and thinner is high wear areas.
I refinish the grips and add a minor distressing job.

He or you might hunt for used not abused 51 or perhaps order a one from Cabela's ( Pietta )
I perfur Uberti  but it does not matter that much.
Course there is 2 Gen 51 Navy's but they will be $$$ even for shooters ( unfired colector models are going for $600 +)

Destressing leather is another touch of Art ...
I agree with going to David Carrico he has a Civilian flap holster in brown... Destressing is not that diffacult it's a matter of
wet fitting the Colt and scuffing the finish at high spots and some aging highlights with darker dye.

Chuck Barrows is a master at creating "NEW" old look leather..

Here is a picture of my 1851 Navy Colt by Pietta. I bought it from Sportsman's Warehouse for $134.99.

After taking the gun apart, I removed the original finish with white vinegar. I worked on it a bit with steel wool and then oiled it. It's not a real true antique finish but it did give the gun a little different look. The grips have the original varnish finish removed and Tru-Oil applied.

Please note that I had a typo error. My Navy is an 1851 not an 1841

Cimarron stocks a few antique finish guns, but now that they are having the antiqueing done by a guy in Texas instead of Italy, you can get any gun that is in stock sent out for antique finish before they ship it.

Check this guy out.  I've already read two posts where folks have ordered guns from him.  Reading his website and looking at his pictures makes me think he does a pretty good job and the price seems more than fair.

I sent him an 1851 Pietta I got for a sweet deal and ordered another 1851 to set up as a pair of shooters.   Basically both guns set up as his cowboy special indicates - just I had one pistol that I sent him in a flat rate box.

He was finishing up the guns this past weekend - I will let you know when they arrive and send pics.

My feeling from talking to folks via email - this pard has found a nice niche market and since it is done as second job - just by him - the prices are awesome.

He has been aewsome with emails and phone calls as things have progressed and I think my final order, money and gun got to him in late June.

Cimarron does have the 1851 Navy in "old finish" for an added $65
