Finally had to clean my Mountie '76 !!
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:39:36 PM »
Everything came together at last.  :) Got 10 rounds of .348 reformed, loaded them with 65g of FFg and a lubed wad and topped it off with a bullet (457122 - I've got the 457192 mold but I have 50 457122 hollowpoints sitting here so I used them).  I loaded a couple with the brass trimmed short enough to allow the loaded cartridge to be just over 2.25, the rest I left long expecting the fireforming to shorten them a bit (it did).

I went to the range intending to see if everything cycled all right and to fire form the brass. I didn't expect any problems in that regard as I had tested the action with 4 original 45/75 rounds I have and the action worked perfectly with those rounds.  I have no intention of firing those, a couple of them seem to be quite old and the other two look like reloads of indeterminate age.  The two shorter rounds cycled and fired flawlessly.  :D  The longer ones had to fed singly - but that is no surprise.

But after letting loose and having things come together I decided to see if I could get a group at 50 yds.   ;D  Now I'm really looking forward to seeing what I get when I'm shooting fully formed cases and the 457192.s ! ! !

A Happy Icebox Bob.

Where ever did you get the 457192 mould. I can't find one anywhere?

Bob, that is a nice group including the X flyer! ;D  I'm betting the group was shot with the original sights that came on the '76.  I'll also bet that if you put a peep sight on your rifle - the groups will tighten up appreciably

I am very curious to find out how accurate the original sights allow you to shoot.  I live about 40 miles from the site of the only battle that I know of in which the '76 was actually used; the Battle of Batoche.  I am curious to see what they can actually do.

This would be a far more difficult process if it weren't for the people on this website (especially Hobie) who are so free in sharing their experiences and knowledge.  Great place to be!!!! :)
