Taylor's 1892 Takedown Rifle

Has anyone had any experience with Taylor's 1892 Takedown Rifle? Are there any problems with the Takedown feature? How does this rifle perform in .45 Colt?

Check in with Old Top, he has one of the original takedown 92's from Taylors, only his is in the "only true calibre". (that would be 44/40) I will foward this and he will get to you with an honest opinon.

Howdy Curley,
Thanks for your reply. I would would have no problem with getting this rifle in .44/40 caliber. I'll look forward to Old Top's opinion.

Cimarron carries the same '92's and for what it is worth, there have been zero returns for anything related to the takedown feature. I haven't shot these '02's but have handled a lot of them and cycled rounds through them. The early ones were often kind of clunky actionwise, but the later guns have been much smoother. The latest 45's I've played with were fine, although seems like the 44-40's were better.

Curly is almost correct in that I have a Taylor's 92 take down but it is not an original Windchester, I have had no problems with it other then the sights which were replaced as soon as I bought the rifle. My pard Cole Harbor has one that is original in 32-20 and side by side you cannot tell them apart. I have the 24" barrel and it is in 44-40, shoots like a dream and other then learning the way to work it properly (cannot just flick the lever as the 73) it is very accurate. Works just like a regular 92, the take down feature is nice to store it, I have been very happy with the whole rifle.

Howdy Old Top,

Thank you for your input and comments. I have two reasons for getting this rifle. I shoot .38 specials in an 1866 and want to go to a bigger caliber. Also I would like a gun that breaks down to a shorter length for easier transporting on a motorcycle. I reload 38 specials, .45 Colt and .45-70 now and would learn how to reload .44/40.

What kind of sight did you put on your 1892? I just love the Buckhorn sight on my 1866.

I do not know what sight I had put on it, but it is a semi buckhorn similar to the 66.

Thanks for your reply. A Buckhorn sight would be the first thing done to an 1892 I'd buy.
