Trigger pulls
« on: August 05, 2008, 09:05:16 AM »
Trigger pulls on Taylors carbine and rifle, both never shot, carbine 8.2 pounds, rifle 12.4 pounds.  Considering some grind and polish for the main springs per the suggestions on our thread.

Shoot 'em some before you do anything more than very basic.  The trigger pull on mine seemed outrageously heavy when I first tried it, but I don't even notice it any more.  I haven't put the scale to it, so I don't know just how heavy it actually is, but for shooting at steel in a match there is no noticeable issue.  Of course your mileage may vary...

Howdy, Pard,
Actually, I'm surprised that the one carbine has that light a trigger pull.  The basic Spencer lockwork is based on the Sharps lock, and they (at least the originals) are quite heavy due to the mainspring pressure on the sear.  Unless you have a set trigger, you really have to put up with a fairly heavy (compared to a Winchester lever action) pull.  The main thing that stoning the sear contacts can do is insure a smooth pull, but not necessarily very light!  Matter of safety.

Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

Thanks for the input guys, I will fire both for a while to see if they lighten up, then check them again with my digital scale.  In the big picture as long as I can get a clean shot at a whitetail I will be content.
