Loads for the 45-75

Has anyone done any messing around with Swiss 1.5 BP and/or IMR 2400 rifle powder?  I have heard that 2400 has been used with some success in the 45-60 so am curious.  Got a pound of Swiss today so want to give them both a try.  Not together tho..

I have not tried it in the 45-75 yet, but I have used Swiss 1.5 in both the 45-70 and in the 45-60.   Drop tube it and use an over powder wad.   It seems to work best with lite compression.  Too much compression and you will get hard fouling with it.

I think that I will try 72 grains of Swiss and see how it works-with a wad.  I also have loaded up 5 rounds of Pyrodex CTG at 56 grains and will give that a try.   So far I have 8 different loads to try when this weather gets a tad bit nicer.  The ones that do the best will get chronographed.  So far, the best load has been 43.5 grains of 3031 which is an old stand-by for me for many years in the 45-70, 45-90 and 40-82.  Thanks for the input.  Also want to try 2400.  A friend of mine has an original 45-60 and he uses 22 grains of the stuff for a hunting load with great success.

I would be interested in what you find out about the 2400!

I am currently using 38.0 gr of IMR3031, with a 305 gr bullet, for my 22"barrel 45-75.  Seems to work fairly well.  If I get up around the low 40's and there is a quite a bit more stomp!

I'll keep you guys posted.  Right now am waiting for the weather to get better than it is.  Am still loading some test loads and one of them will be the 2400.  I know that friend of mine that has that old 45-60 claims that is the only powder that he will use.  His only complaint is that by the end of the day, his knuckles are dragging on the ground from lugging that rifle around.
