is shooting the longrange side matches prone legal
« on: February 06, 2008, 02:39:45 AM »
I attended a shoot where I shot the side match of Buffalo rifle with my rolling block 45-70 at 400 and 500 yards.   Every one else shot standing up with crossed sticks where as I shot prone with crossed sticks. Is this legal.  I notice BPCR shooters shoot silouette at 400 and 500 yards prone.  Any comments please.

Howdy

Other than specifying the guns and ammo themselves, SASS doesn't seem to define them very much, regarding how the matches will actually be conducted. Nothing about how many rounds, how far, timed or not timed, etc. Just defining the guns and the ammo, that's it. I've noticed very little standardization, club to club and match to match regarding this. I  see nothing in the official SASS rules about how the shooters will shoot. Most matches that I've attended the long range matches have been shot from a bench with a rest. One match is done offhand. I think it is left up to the individual Match Director to determine how each match will be shot, and you will have to ask what's a legal shooting position and what's not at each match.

That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Yep that's the way it goes.

Thanks for the replies.  I will keep shooting from prone until told otherwise.

SASS DOES have specific rules regarding the scoring of Long Range side matches.  Number of hits First then either time or shoot-off to break ties.  SASS does not specify the range, targets or shooting position.  Most of the shoots that I go to are offhand if the target is 200yds or less.  Over 200yds they usually allow some type of support, ie shooting sticks, from the bench or off a bail.  Never seen any shot from the prone position but out here ya never see any past 300rds.  At the West Virginia and Virginia State shoots your shooting up the side of a mountain so I don't see any way you could shoot it prone.

The shoots that I have attended here Down Under have the Steel Buffalo at 400 and 500 yards for the single shots, (black powder and smokeless) Then the rifle calibre lever action is 200 and 300 yards off hand, Pistol calibre lever action is 75 and 100 yards. They are great fun.
