Some paper patch questions
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:32:30 PM »
I have some questions maybe someone could help me with.

1. Do pp bullets require special dies to load?

2. How are they lubed?

3. How are they seated and crimped without tearing?

4. How do you determine the right size for your gun?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I messed with paper patch bullets a little bit, some answers are there is no lube -the paper rides between the bullet and bore to prevent leading. I used a regular expanding die and hand seated them. If you are shooting them in a single shot you don't need a crimp. You may want to get a book The paper patch bullet by Paul Matthews

Take it from a guy who has shot PP since 1982, skip the Matthews book as it is next to worthless for authentic bore diameter PP BP loading. Try this:

I shoot about 50%-50% PP and GG bullets, The PP are a little more work but a lot more fun. I dont even use dies (except for a Universal Decapping tool), I use fire formed cases my bullets are of a diameter that is a couple of thou. under the ID of my cases with the paper rolled on them. I wet the paper before I roll it and then after it dries it pretty much stays in place. I then smear a very small amount of lube (SPG or your choice) on the patched bullet.
I seat my bullet as I shoot. I load the case with powder (Black of course), compress and cap it with a card wad. When I shoot I place the patched bullet about 3 - 4 mm into the case mouth, insert the round in the chamber and the seating depth is then set by the (uebergangs kronus). I am unsure of the word in English, (Lands maybe).
This method works great out to 200 meters (the longest range that I can Shoot in Austria) in my 45-110 Shilo, and my 45-90 Pedersoli.
To determine the correct size bullet for your rifle you can make a cast of the chamber thentake the OD and subtract the thickness of your case wall, then find a bullet size that is a couple of thou. smaller( with the paper wrap) than the ID of the case. That method is very complicated, I just measured the ID of my fire formed cases and sized the bullet to that. Quick and dirty, but it worked for me.
