New Guy in Town, With a Question.
« on: February 08, 2007, 09:14:35 PM »
Howdy Pards,

Im new round these parts, Just signed up.
This sure is an interesting sport yall have. Ive been doing a bit of research round here and thought it time to join up.

First a little backround, Im 23 Years, I have no experiance in the sport but have been interested for a long while. I recently had my first child, Soraya Courday, my beautiful little gal, and thought....what a good sport and Darned fun time for a family to be involved in.

I havent registered with SASS or any others of the sort yet but will in the future...i figure beter to get my feet a bit wet first.

Ive been shooting and hunten darned neer my whole life, But have never really been into competitive shooting untill i found CAS. I like the friendly laid back aproach.

So now that i have gave yall a bit of Backround, I have a few questions i would like to ask.

First is i curently own a Legacy Model 92 Puma chambered in 454.
I was wondering if this would be useable since it can also fire .45 colt?

I would like to use this for a while Untill i can afford a differant rifle specificaly chambered for .45 colt. Especialy since ill need to invest in a second six gun and scattergun to get started.

Second Question i have is can anyone direct me to a friendly club or group of guys/gals in Northern Idaho? I dont personally Know anyone in the sport yet and would like to meet a few folks to set me on my way.

Thanks,
Any responses are much appreciated.

Hey, Welcome aboard!
You may want to also check the SASS Website for clubs in your area. There are several but I can't name them right off. The NW Regional used to be held at Farrugate(sp?) state park so they're there. Cas City is full of good knowledgeable pards & pardettes. Also Spokane has at least one CAS club. Hang in ther and someone that knows the local clubs will chime it. This is indeed a family sport. I see kids & grannies blamming away having great fun. Enjoy!

Since I have 14+ guns, I've been called the Imelda Marcos of Cap&Ball. Now, that's a COMPLIMENT!

Take a gander here at the SASS clubs listed for Idaho.

Looks like Spirit Lake and Moscow.

There may also some near you inWashington as well.

You should be able to shoot your rifle using 45's assuming it feeds them well enough.

With a young family, if you plan to buy guns, also consider getting 38's/357 since the ammon cost is much less.  But there is nothing at all wrong with the good ol' 45, if'n you can afford it.

Welcome to the fire, D.C.!

If you can fire .45 Colt in that rifle, I think you'll be just fine with it.

The .45 Colt is a great, verstile cartridge (I'm a dedicated afficionado ... unless I'm shooting .455, that is) - considerably more expensive than .38 if you're shooting "store bought" ammo, but if you reload - which is a good idea if only to enable you to tailor your loads - then the cost of components shouldn't break the bank ...

They are some Cowboy Action clubs on the north side of the "Medicine Line" in B.C. not terribly far from you - in particular at Kelowna, which hosts a SASS regional shoot each year ....  (Bit of bureaucratic nonsense to get the paperwork in order ... but I don't think it's any more than I have to go through to get my Form 6NIA to bring guns into the US.)

Thanks for the replys pards,

My wife doesnt shoot sixguns, Shes never been comfortable with them, But she is very interested in Dressin the Part,
She already has plans to break the bank, ;) She has shown some interest of maybe doing the long range rifle stuff though.

Shes more interested in meeting some fine people and watchin me shoot,

I do want to get my daughter into shooting when the times right so i figure this a good way to introduce it to the youngn

I plan on shootin .45  since the rifle and sixgun i own fire it. so that leaves me with one sixgun and a scattergun to purchase.

What are most the guys usen for there scattergun?
I was thinkin id prolly get a good ole coach gun of the 12 variety. since i generally see them at a good fair price. But if'n you guys think them pumps would be beter i may go that route.

Thanks Folks

Howdy

45 Colt is a fine cartridge, I shoot it myself in my pistols. But you need to be aware that you will go through a lot of ammo shooting in this sport. Figure conservatively 10 pistol rounds and 10 rifle rounds per stage. Plus shotgun. Figure an average of 4 shotgun shells per stage. Most matches are between 6 and 8 stages. So for a 6 stage match you will probably need 60 rounds of pistol, 60 rounds of rifle, and maybe 1 box of shotgun. At around $20 or so per box of 50, that adds up very quickly with 45 Colt. And that's just a 6 stage match. 8 stages mean more ammo. This does not include practice ammo.

45 Colt is a great cartridge. Like I say, I shoot it myself. But the first thing I realized when I started shooting cowboy was that if I didn't learn to reload this stuff myself, I would be in the poorhouse very soon.

If you own a gun or two that shoot 45 Colt already, that's great. But do a little math to make sure you don't want to be shooting 38s. They are much cheaper to shoot. The other day we had a pard who had just finished ourfitting himself with all his guns, and then he found out how expensive big bores are to shoot. I wish somebody had told him first.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Welcome doc!  Youre gonna love this stuff !  What kind of six shooter is .45 colt ya shootin?  Just curious  ;D

I took advantage of lay away when I found the guns I wanted...I like lay away   ;)

I bought two Ruger vaqueros' in .45, 1873 win. in .45, tuarus thunderbolt in .45, stoeger couch gun 12 guage, two 1858 Rem. cap n ball and I have a 1866 on lay away, and gettin ready to purchase a Bond derringer for side matches.  Still workin on getting an 1874 Sharps for long range shootin.  Im out of control !!!!  hehehehehe   ;D

I also find a lot of shirts and stuff at the thrift store real cheap.

I know it is spensive to get started, but once you have your guns and leather the rest will follow...just keep it fun, relax, and enjoy yourself.  You are already ahead of the game with an understanding wife!  ;D
