James,
The above advice is solid. Heed it. However, if you are asking for which guns & gear to get in order to get started I will give you my opinion. If you don't care which category you shoot in (like Modern) then things will be simpler.
Budget gear: A pair of used Ruger blackhawks in 38/357 or 45LC and a rifle to match (used Marlin 94 or Rossi 92) in same caliber and a used SXS 12ga (IGA Coachgun, Stevens 311 or any make SXS proofed for smokeless). Clothes: hit the Goodwill, Salvation Army or other thrift stores for shirts, vests, & pants. I've even shot in bibb overalls & traditional straw hat as a "fightin' Amish" farmer. As for leather, cheap rotgut bargain ($10 holsters & a wide belt) gear that won't let the gun fall out but not hold it too tight will do.
Better gear: Colt clones, Vaqueros, etc, '66, '73 winchesters & '97 Pump original or remake. Holsters made by the many wonderful crafts men & women leathersmiths are both functional & beautiful. You get what you pay for.
I started out with a borrowed rifle, '61 Navy, Ruger blackhawk, & my borther's 20ga SXS. I've since accumulated large herd of perCUSSIN' revolvers, 3 SXSs, and two Rossi '92s plus gobs of period correct shirts, pants, suspenders, CHEAP boots, etc and still getting more. It doesn't quit. It's too much fun. I do the blackpowder and Frontiersman thing but about 95% of folks seem to have fun with the BP substitutes called "smokeless powder". I don't know why, but they seem to smile pretty good too. As the others have said, folks will likely loan you guns for a while til you see what fits you and your persona. It's a passion.
