Colt Cowboy model

Anybody know anything about the Colt Cowboy Model?  I've always stayed inside the Ruger circle, but I'm considering straying, if only for a visit.  Thanks in advance for any insights.

I've never seen one in person, but they're supposed to be the same thing as a ruger NV. The only difference is they have a horse on the side.

The Colt Cowboy operates on coil springs and does have a transfer bar.

When the Colt Cowboy, which was made overseas, first came out it was over $600, and not worth a penny of it.

Taylor's and Company is selling an Island Girl pistol that is very nice.  The prototype was worked on by Marshal Harland Wolf and Island Girl.  This gun has a complete action job from the factory.  Very, very nice.  I don't see them on their website yet though.

I had no idea that they were made overseas!  Wow, no wonder the price difference.

Actually deucedaddy the frame was allegedly made in the US but the rest was made and assembled overseas.

They were built in the Czech Republic.

The Czechs have a long, honorable history of producing high-quality arms - but this wasn't one of them - most likely due to some efforts designed to speed up manufacture.

I've heard that - like many clones - they could be made to shoot and could have their finish re-done - but if there's 'that' much work involved - best to look for a used Colt.

Wholesale on the current late-production Colt SAA is $980.

Having owned a Cowboy, at the prices they want for one now, I'd go with the Ruger New Vaquero. It is a much better gun.

Colt stopped marketing the Cowboy several years ago due to quality problems. It never really looked like a real Colt and after the quality problems were noted, sales dropped off to the point Colt just stopped production of it. It was very overpriced for what it was and there were many other much better guns out there that were cheaper and did work well.

I bought a pair of them when they first came out. The actions were rough & definitely needed an action job. The grips also fit poorly. I replaced them with some scrimshaw imitation ivory grips. I never had any problems with them. I sold them about 3 years ago. The hombre that bought them sent them off and had them nickel plated at a cost of about $240 each. I told him that he was nuts, that he'd never get his money back out of them if he decided to sell them. He's still shooting them and hasn't had any problems with them either.

I recently picked up a used Cowboy for a very reasonable price ($290).  I've only been to the range with it three times, but it shoots and functions great.  Fit and finish is excellent.  I have read a great many negative comments concerning the Cowboy, but haven't seen any of it in this revolver.  As a matter of fact I picked up a new USFA Rodeo at the same time, and they BOTH shoot great.  I just run into a little operator error once and a while!!

The one thing I'll have to get used to is the transfer bar system, but that isn't something particular to the Cowboy.

From my limited experience...I like it...shoots great, fine fit and finish.

I don't think the Cowboy sold very well for Colt, but the Rodeo from USFA is very popular and is sometimes backordered.  I don't think the Cowboy was any worse than the competition, it is just they (competition) had a slightly better price point.

Some Pards like to compare the Cowboy to the  Colt SAA. Different animal.
I have 2 that I have had since these came out. Shoot them as main match for a year. Now off and on when I shoot the new fangled powder.
Fit and Finish was as good as any rooger I have bought. I have FLAT gotten some rotten Roogers in the past.
Function could not be better.
There were some good ones made.

Rooger....ha, ha, ah ahhhhh! Good one!     I feel the same way about Rugers and the Colt Cowboys, they are in a different class to either US Firearms, Colt SAA or the true clones.
