Greetings and Salutations!

A quick intro, as I'm new and this is my first "post" here.

I've wanted a Spencer carbine since reading "Two Flags Flying" as an 8th grader, and have finally taken the plunge into owning one.

I would like to see if there is any information about this firearm available out there, and this forum looked like the ideal place to begin my search.

The serial 11418 seems to put the carbine as in the first shipment of 500, and the faint cartouche looks like "DAP"

I've attached a few photos, and certainly welcome any info/comments.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Jim!  I am sure that the holders of the fabled Springfield records will look up your s/n for any possible matches.  Be sure to visit the FAQ sticky on the top of the page and be sure to formally join the SSS (spencer shooting society).
What are your plans for your fine carbine?

Jim,

No reply to my Email >:( >:(  so here is the same info I Emailed to you, offered one more time!

Closest serial # I find to your Spencer carbine serial # 11418 is  -   # 11452, a Spencer carbine issued to a member of Company I, 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry in October 1864.  Hope you've read my disclaimer on Spencer Serial #s.  The Spencers were issued in no special order or special sequence of serial #s . . . so your carbine may have gone to a different unit than the 19th NY mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

I did see your email, and was planning to reply.  ;D

I appreciate the lookup, and understand the rough guesstimating involved.

I don't plan on firing the carbine, I am looking for 7 period correct cartridges do display with it.

Since my knowledge is limited, I figured that if anyone saw anything odd they could chime in.

Ok, a few more days, and I guess I will ask a few specific questions.

Is it unusual to only have the single DAP cartouche?

Does anyone know where I can obtain a correct replacement screw to replace the one that holds the extractor? I see this one, as well as the extractor; and the site says they are "original", does anyone know if this is correct?

Is it unusual to have no inspectors marks on the internal components? In the photos below you can see one side of the internals, the other side is equally blank.

On the fore end, the initials "R.H." were stamped into the wood where it meets the receiver. Is there a name associated with this?

Is there a source for inert display ammo? I would like a couple rounds of inert to demonstrate feeding cycle.

I gave the gun a light wipe with Rem Oil just as a precaution since it was probably handled a bit at the CADA show before I obtained it; I am thinking I may give it a light coat of a heavier preserving oil internally, are there any concerns in doing so?

I have the Marcot book en route, and will surely be spending a few nights reading. Thanks for any information!

Jim W,

From what I can see from your questions, info and photos, every thing look ok to me.

Jim: Thanks for the pictures. I also have a new 1860 spencer carbine. The pictures helped me look at what the inner parts should look like. My extractor screw looked similar to yours but is missing part of the head. So your link helped in ordering a new screw and blade.  Thats what makes this site so valuable. the sharing of information.  How do you post pictures? Is it in additional options?

I bought a replacement extractor and screw for my original 65...not as easy as it looks.  it worked, but not as well as the originals.  so...I left the originals in....I had to replace the spring and thought I'd replace it all...new spring, but kept the rest in...
my screw looks exactly like that.  Mine is a Burnside, very low number...four digits...Ken
