I have a chance to buy an original Spencer rifle serial no. 4124. It is complete with a couple issues such as
a fixed rear sight being dove tailed in. It does have an empty hole for a Stabler cut off. I did not have
camera with me for a picture. Top of receiver is marked very clearly Spencer Repeating on top line
followed by Rifle Co. Boston Mass on 2nd line and Pat'd March 6 1860 on 3rd line.

Dispite the work and parts I are interested due to it's early apparent production and the fact it is
a rifle and not a carbine. Any info will help.

Treebeard,

Take a look and see where your Spencer rifle serial # 4124 fits into the listing in my SRS volume #4.  You decide if you still want to buy the rifle  ;) ;)

Thanks to Two Flints my interest has risen a notch or two. I looked up the 9th Mich Calvary and saw where it
served from mid 1863 to the end of the war. Most of that time in Ky, Tenn, Ga and the Carolinas. According to
a NPS.gov web site it suffered 28 Killed and wounded in it's war. These Spencer rifles must have been a lucky
charm as these were the bloodist two years of the Civil War. Of course the Spencers could not have saved the
154 that died of disease.
If I can close the deal I will post pictures.

I was able to pick up the rifle--it may be a few days but I will break it down and get some pictures. I am very excited as
I never thought I would be able to obtain one of these.

Treebeard,

Terrific.  Please post photos . . . nice big sharp and clear ones for all to see.

Two Flints--When I take the pictures I will try to follow your advice on getting them to come out well as this is not
something I've had a lot of success with in the past. With the serial no. of 4124 it must have come out of that initial
first contract for 10,000.

Sent several pictures to Two Flints and hope he will be able to post. This rifle has several issues which I am trying to correct
as follows:
1. Replacing tumbler as both full and half notches will not hold the sear--using an original in good shape.
2. will need to derust and clean up the breech block some more including freeing up the firing pin.
3. The loading tube is very hard to remove--anyone out there dealt with this problem before?
4. This rifle is all original except that the rear sight was replaced with a buckhorn type at some time--may just
   leave it as is.
5. The two rear barrel bands are not being held by the band retaining springs--one is broke and I have a replacement
and the other I will try to salvage--it seems to have been pressed to deep into the wood to exert pressure.
6. Wood needs to have some finish applied---I would appreciate suggestions.
7.  Bore is not salvageable--would have to reline if i wish to shoot it.
8. Lever has been bent down a little at some point and needs to be corrected.

I knew this was gong to require some work but feel it will be worth doing--My goal is not a full restoration but to return it to full working condition.

Here are the photos, posted by Two Flints for me!

Treebeard - I admire you for taking on this previously neglected rifle and bringing it back to servicable condition.  My rifle had a difficult to remove magazine tube also.  I removed the inner mag and thoroughly cleaned the outer tube with a bore brush (12 ga I think) and solvent, cleaned the inner tube well also.  There was a burr on the innner tube that I worked down also.  Gave it a light oiling and it is noticably easier.  It is still snug, but this made an improvement.

Thanks to Two Flints for getting the pictures up. Of my eight fixes I need to do on this rifle I now have the lock working
After installing an original tumbler . Only seven more to go!!
