Hello,
I hope that some of you on the boardcan help me. A friend of mine has just acquired what appears to be a model 1867 carbine. It has the correct barrel  M 1867 and receiver markings Spencer repeating ,Rifle Co, Boston Mass, Patd March 6 1860,Serial # 4xxx .

The barrel has a line of characters that I assume to be Japanese. However the rifle appears to be a single shot, with a solid steel buttplate. What do we have, and what is the approximate value every thing is present except for the saddle ring and magazine cutoff. I would put the gun at 50% condition. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Hi,

It would be great to see photos of your Spencer with Japanese modifications.  A short time ago there was a photo posted on SSS of a Samurai warrior with a Spencer.  I'll see if I can find it and re-post it.

Photos of your friend's Spencer would be great to see especially with any Japanese alterations or markings.

Here is that photo.

I will try to post photos tomorrow or monday. Why does this spencer appear to be a single shot? Were guns made for the Japanese?

I have seen Japanese marked Spencer 1867 carbines, these were navy marked, but have never seen a solid butt plate on one, pictures of this removed from the carbine might also explain what is going on
