I got to handle a S&W #3 that is supposed to have been carried by Wyatt Earp when he was in Alaska. I doubt that any movie does much research on the actual gun(s) carried by by someone. Even in the Cooper movie about Sgt York the guns were wrong and York was on the set.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

It is amazing how many guns there are that famous people have owned. In Wyoming you can run into nearly 2000 people that are related to Tom Horn in some way or another and they all have one of his personal guns.
I never considered myself a failure...I started out at the bottom and happen to like it here!

In reference to the initial post and picture . . . while I doubt that the writer knows what he is wiring about . . . . he does say S&W .44 New Model American . . . . . NOT Schofield !

No wonder there is so much MISSINFORMATION passed about when it isn't even possible to quote and article ( which is probably wrong anyhow ) correctly !   :o
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Go down south east of me in Missouri and they are all releated to Jesse James.  Decided long ago that Bob Ford must have shot an innocent man, geez as busy as he was I doubt he had time to rob all those trains and banks. ;)

".44 Smith and Wesson New Model No. 3 American"

So what was it?

Smith and Wesson New Model #3:

Smith and Wesson American:

Anybody can see the difference.

Or perhaps a New Model #3 chambered for the 44 S&W American cartridge? An unusual chambering, but not unknown.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

I went into a place to eat in New Mexico. There was a gun mounted up over the bar with a plaque.. I went up and read it, 'This is the only gun in New Mexico that did not belong to Billy the Kid'. Must have been worth a fortune.

Bill Mackin, author of "Cowboy and Gunfighter Collectibles", used to show up at gun shows around Denver with a M1877 Colt's DA. A sign next to it proclaimed, "This is the only Colt's M1877 that did NOT belong to Billy The Kid!"  Of course, I'm still on the lookout for that left-handed Winchester '73 Billy is shown with in that photo! ;)
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

According to Larry Wilson (who's reputation is a shambles right now, BTW) in "The Peacemakers", Virgil Earp carried a Smith and Wesson New Model No. 3 to the fight.  Wilson shows the revolver and gives the serial number to boot.  I don't recall is he makes a claim one way or another for what Wyatt was packing (other than it NOT being a "Buntline Special").

The cool part (to me at least) is that I have a nice New Model No. 3 that is less than 150 off (serial numbers at least) from the one pictured as being Virgil's.  Kinda cool, I think.  Therefore I am (obviously) a strong proponent of Virgil Earp having carried the Smith, as claimed, at the OK Corral fight!  ;)

Cheers!

Virgil was twice the Law Man Wyatt ever was. Wyatt got better press.

Here's a question. Suppose you're pointing a gun at me and, deadeye that I am, I shoot your gun outta your hand now where does the bullet go? Looks to me that with hundreds of guns shot out of hundreds of hands at least one of those bullets would have then hit a bad guy?
