A small peening hammer should work out nice for you buddy. I don't use the tandy tool for anything but actually setting the burr on the rivet. I trim it by setting the nippers on the burr, then picking up the angle slightly. Then I put it on my anvil, hammer it flat (with the flat of the peening hammer), and if anything needs finessed, I go to the round.

Just how I do it, though. Doesn't make it the right way. :D

ME TOO, 316 I would suggest you wast a few rivets on some scrap first before you do your gun belt, you'll get a better idea of how it works and what you need to do to get it right, when you do your peening make sure you hit it square or you will bend the stem over and you will have to start over.

I've done it both ways...anvil, hammer it flat ,when I didn't have my Osborn rivet set .
And I've used the Tandy Rivet set.
It works just as well as the Osborn.  I use sidecutters or Dikes to nip to length.
Once you set the burr with the Rivet set, one square hit with the hammer on top makes nice flat rose bud button with no ragged
peen over.

I agree with the consensus here. I set the burr with the tool, clip the rivet to length and peen the rivet with a 2oz ball peen hammer on a small anvil.

IMO get one of Bob Douglas' 3 piece sets - they are not cheap, but they make the most beatiufully set rivets you'll ever see....look like the rivets on Levi's with that nicely rounded head....

I think Chuck also gives a good in depth lesson of this in one of his leather working videos.  I have, at times, gotten so aggravated over this little skill that I have even threatened to buy a giant compressor to power a pneumatic hammer!!!!  By dang, I'll show them little .02 critters who runs thangs round here.   ;)

I think we all feel your pain there friend!

I got one of those little anvils from Tandy. It helped a lot.

I met Bob and his lovely wife in Pendleton last year. They are a class act; have very good tools, and a great wealth of knowledge concerning leatherwork. They were extremely helpful, as was Barry King, who was also at the Leather Show. It was worth the four hour drive (one way) just to meet the Douglases and Barry King. JD

i just wish i could afford to get some of the better tools like that but tryin to get money together so i can get my knee fixed but thats not going to good

You need to find a knee surgeon who shoots and needs leather, lots of leather :o

Seriously, needing surgery is no joking matter, especially if it's keeping you from working to your full potential

I avoided knee surgery as long as I could, llike a couple of years of shots, but when I started falling down trying to get up or down stairs, I gave in. Thankfully it was only one knee.

       Howdy 316

I was just wondering, I use both, the larger ones seem to work easier for me than the 12's but it is just me not doing what I'm supposed to do, I need more practice doing rivets, I don't care for the Tandy setting tool, and might end up going with the Douglas set of tools, these copper rivets look so good when set right, I've done a few that I felt real proud of and then some I want to hide, those are the ones I ended up redoing.

Take care and good luck with yours

I've put this thread on our FAQ thread listing. It has some good information. Good contributions, pards. If anyone has any other information or contact info for supplies, by all means add it to this thread.
